On to the next set of my computing problems. I have any old computer that was running windows 95. One day it decided that it could find/load sys.reg. I realized that something had been deleted from my registry but my computer was still working and I didn't consider it much of a problem. But I did notice an extreme slow down in my computer. Now I understand that computers with pentium MMX processors aren't going to be that fast but this was even slower. So i've tolerated it but I would really like to fix it. Just the other day I got the windows 98 second edition upgrade CD from a friend hoping that would fix my registry woes. Alas, even with windows 98 sys.reg is still a problem. I really don't wanna reformat my hard drive because i've got some stuff on it that I have no way of moving off of it unless I buy a jump drive. I'm pretty cheap so if any body can help me I would greatly appreciate it.

The exact error is "Cannot import sys.reg: Error opening the file. There may be a disk or file system error." I'm not sure if that will help or not. It really slows down when I type in areas like I am now. Like writting for this post.

I would find a way to save your data and reformat. Not the answer you wanted but thats what I would do.

Let's start from the beginning, what steps did you take when you installed Win98.

Upgrades are fraught with danger... malware isn't nececarily the cause, but it may play a part if it was present before you upgraded. In my experience its not worth going round fixing all the things upgrades broke, its more effort than its worth and its easier just to go back everything up to CD-R or another computer (network cable) and re-install from scratch.

    But I'm sure you'll get a - different - solution here.

No guarantee this will help, however,

Start Windows in MS-DOS. (Reboot and hold down CTRL key)

Select "Safe Mode Command Prompt Only" from the start up menu.

Get to the C: prompt, type scanreg /restore, and then press ENTER.

Select the registry you want to restore and follow the prompts.

Other commands that may help include scanreg /autorun and scanreg /fix.

I'm still of the opinion though that a fresh install is the best way.

These problems always return to haunt you.
