Computer wont boot, win xp, it wants me to re install that windows root system file. Could I just just set up xp again?

    Thanks in advance!

Sure, and you might have to (a repair anyway). However, what led up to this problem?

You'd be ahead to go to recovery console and run chkdsk /r first.

this is the hardware abstraction layer which is set up whien windows first installs.... did you change anything in the bios before this happened? like plug & play options or any power related options?

Im sorry, you need to be more specific. This error occurs on boot, not during an install or normal operation. Specifically describe what you have done so far, and what has happened and so forth.

Did files copy? Is it rebooitng for the first time from the install (text mode to gui mode)? Did you do the chkdsk /r first?

opps, sorry. When you turn the computer on it begins to boot, then it stops. the error that happens next reads: there is a problem with hardware, please reinstall windows root>\system32\hal.dll Which I tried, it kept poping back to the error message above. So I just tried to reinstall windows all together.
    Thank you

Boot to the CD, go to recovery console, and run chkdsk /r. If there is a filesystem problem, no amount of reinstalls will fix it.

I finished the window xp that i had started before your last post. and the computer boots fine now. my question is why did this error happen in the first place? "there is a problem with hardware, please reinstall windows root>\system32\hal.dll "
    Thanks

Well, run that chkdsk--if the drive is full, it could be part of the drive has failed, or you may have had something malicious happen. How much space did you have free prior to this>?
