    Hello,

I hope this is the right forum for my problem. If it isn't, please point me in the right direction.

I am having a little problem with my computer sound: there is none. Computer was running fine, then the sound started working only intermittently, now it has stopped completely. My DVD drives seems to work just fine as to my various media players. When I launch a song or a movie or whatever, everything looks great but there is no sound.

I have tried a different set of speakers and also headphones with no luck.

A couple days ago I replaced by motherboard (due to an unrelated problem) so all connections to the sound card have been undone and redone. Still no sound.

I read somewhere that RegSeeker can sometimes fix this problem. I ran it and still no sound.

When I look at device manager, my sound card is listed there. System says it is enabled and working fine. My ears disagree with that one.

    Any suggestions?

This should be moved to the driver forum (mods, admins, are you listening? LOL ). Perhaps you can provide us with the make and model of the motherboard, and we can go from there. Have you tried a system restore a date before the sound problems? Did you do a fresh Windows install when you swapped motherboards? Or was it a repair install? Did you install all the motherboard drivers? Windows Updates? We really need more info to be able to help!

Should I keep this thread alive or post a new one in drivers?

I don't want to break the rule about double-posting, so I will keep posting here until I get clarification.

I have had the sound problem for the past couple months. About 1 week ago my computer wouldn't turn on. After talking with Dell (who I bought the computer from) they told me I needed a new motherboard. They told me that they would ship out an identical match to my existing one. I popped the old one out, put the new one in, turned on the computer and everything (except sound) worked. I did not reinstall windows.

Where do I look to get the make and model of the motherboard?

A while back I tried a system restore to a time when the sound was working. That worked. But a couple weeks later the sound stopped again, and when I restored it to the same point, the sound still did not work.

Last week I got virumonde. As part of the cure, I had to disable and enable system restore to avoid possible reinfection. So I can longer restore to a time when the sound used to work.

I have windows set to automatically update itself which it does pretty regularly. I have not done any manual updates so I only have the automatic ones.

Back in DOS and early windows I could take apart and tweak my computers to keep them working. I fell out of practice arounds the time windows came up with the registry. I don't even know what info you folks need to help me. But, if you let me know the info you need, I will do my best to dig it up.
