Personally, I don't like either one and I use the 3rd party search tool Agent Ransack (also known as "File Locator Lite").

    Similar question.
    Tried....

    1. stopped/disabled at Services and Applications / Services
    2. unchecked 'Allow Indexing...' box at My Computer / C: / Properties
    3. seems like most related Registry settings are a '0', as suggested by some forums/blogs
    4. still get 'Indexing' "Waiting to receive indexing status..." (see attached scrnshot), & WindowsSearch.exe is still using about 11,000k according to Task Manager

What is needed to stop the 'Waiting'..." (and the 11,000k) ?

You restarted the machine after stopping the service, correct? You didn't mention that...

OK, are we taling about the Windows Search (Windows Desktop Search) add-on program?

    If so, you can try:
Right click the taskbar, select "Toolbars" > "Windows Search Deskbar" and uncheck it.
Reboot and see what you get.

Try to uninstall it from Add/Remove programs. Again reboot to see if the symptom persists.

Thanks for the reply and suggestions.
Sorry its been so long getting back.
    1. Toolbar unchecked, no change.
    2. Add/Remove process show programs that may not work if uninstall (see attached scrnshot) ?
If thats the case, not sure if want to take the chance.

    Have a read at:

  10. The other night I got into Comodo Programs Manager for the first time in a while and found I had a bunch of Windows updates backed up. So I ran them, and one was for Windows Search 4.0.

I hate this Windows Search 4.0. It added four or so items to my Processes, and it seems like my computer is running worse since they came aboard. Particularly objectionable is this memory hog searchindexer.exe, which I have seen go over 100,000 K on VM Size a lot. End Process won't stop it; End Process Tree is required.

How do the Microsoft people think they are doing us a favor behaving like this?

It also seems in some ways less user-friendly than the old Search that has now been demoted to Search Companion. But that program was pretty sorry because of how long it took. I recently got Wise JetSearch to replace that function. It's pretty quick, but it also turns into a memory hog if you forget to shut it down when you're finished with it. I will be interested to see how the two programs in this thread compare to WJS.

Thanks, cipher, for that useful quote. Does anyone see any redeeming value to Windows Search 4.0, or should I just go ahead and uninstall it or maybe disable it?

I have already disabled the very gratuitous annoyance of the Windows Search Deskbar on my taskbar.

I would try different methods and see what works best for you, for the system you're running.

In my case I have disabled Windows search, indexing, all of that. I installed and use |MG| Everything and am very pleased with the speed, depth and low resource consumption.

    ;)
