windows security update keeps looping

I installed my windows updates and it intalled fine, that is until stage 3 of 3. Stage 3 of 3 was 100%, and rather than starting normally, it shows the following: Configuring updates 3 of 3 0% , do not turn off computer.

I tried to start in safe mode, but it loops back to the same update screen.
My computer is HP laptop
My O/S is windos vista home premium
service pack2
connect with cable wireless modem.

Please help, and keep in mind I will need step by step instructions:
If I need to type things in if you bold the exact prompts that will be helpful.
I have no idea where to find registry keys ect.
Please be patient with me, I will do my best to work with you.

I ended up calling Microsoft support and they resolved my problem for free.:-D
