Windows server 2003

when using active directory and creating a Dns domain

do u need to own the domain if the server is just going to be a file server for my network?

No. You can run a local DNS server without being an official public DNS.

 

if I recall correctly, 2003 will actually suggest you name it domain.local or something like that. But as said above, you do not need to have it public and therefore can run any domain locally.

well, now here's a problem. Most desktop AV's check for server OS and will not install if windows server is found.. so you're out of luck there unless you want to purchase an server version.

the only one i have seen so far is black ice server protection
