When I try to access Windows Setup I get the following error:
"Rundll32 has caused an error in SetupXdll. Rundll 32 will now close".
My OS is WinME. Is something that is missing causing this? Everything else
    seems to be working fine.

Does this happen when you boot in Safe Mode?

This will probably work for you but be sure you have a good Restore point before you try the fix / repair.

    Windows ME related.

Problem: Unable to gain access to Add/Remove - Windows Setup

Error Screen - Rundll32 caused an error in setupx.dll

    Fix:
Go to C:\Windows and look for "layout*.inf" file(s) and rename these to "layout*old", reboot and you should now have regained access to the Windows Add/Remove Windows Setup screen.

It is now safe to delete the "layout*old" files if you want.

Did not find a "layout inf" file in Windows folder.Am I looking in the wrong place for it?

    lschmidt,

Look under C:\WINDOWS\INF. You may have two or three, Layout, Layout1, Layout2, etc.

Found lots of INFs using search, but none of them were labled LAYOUT.
Maybe they were somehow deleted or renamed,

Using Windows Explorer, find C:\WINDOWS\INF, click on Inf and that should show some folders and files that look like notepad. Should be in there, just scroll down until you find the Layout file(s). The Layout.Inf files are the ones that look like notepad. There are some that are Layout.Pnf that have the windows logo, don't bother those.

This is crazy,no layout INF to be found. It's like it has disappeared.
SEARCH finds INFs but nothing with LAYOUT on it.

Did you try Windows Explorer instead of the Search function?

Just mention other possible solutions than corrupt layoutN.inf files (where N is a number):

    - SetupX.dll and appwiz.cpl have become corrupt and should be restored from the install-cd MS KB 195064
    - A registry cleaner (Ex. EasyCleaner) have been run, and it has deleted registry-entries required by Windows. Try to undo the registry-clean, or search google for VarLDID.reg

As said before another way to to use a restore-point. (Though be careful about files outside your My Documents folder as they might get deleted)

    Else just reinstall windows.

The Registry Cleaners I've used is JV RegCleaner and JV16 Power Tools.

I used VarLDID.reg and it fixed the problem. THANKS

In reference to the INF folder, nobody told me it was a hidden folder. That would sure have made it a lot easier to find.
