I am currently working on a machine which has none of the XP Service Packs installed on it. When attempting to install either SP1 or SP2 I recieve the error that the file c:\winnt\system32\ftp.exe is currently in use by another program and must be stopped. I have run multiple virus scans and adware scans on this machine. I am still recieving this issue. I was wondering have I overlooked some known issue?

rename the file from safemode, see if it lets you rename it.

Well I have tried to rename the ftp.exe in Normal mode, Safe mode, and command prompt. All to no avail. I have tried running the updates for prior to the service packs but when i try to run the SP either 1 or 2 it tells me that
"C:\windows\system32\ftp.exe is open or in use by another application." The ponly program open is the installation. Has anybody else ran into this issue, with a solution?

Only a few people seem to have had the problem when searching Google, and all of them had some sort of browser hijacker causing the problem. You might want to run HijackThis and post your log for the gurus here to take a look at.
