Hi, is it really necessary to install SP2 if your firewall and antivirus programs are always kept up to date? My firewall keeps my computer 100% stealthed on all ports and my antivirus is always up to date. I also have spywareblaster and a great pop up blocker.
    Thanks for any information.

SP2 is basically good for the masses. It mainly addresses security, as well as a few Internet Explorer enhancements.

If you are diligent with security and have all the necessary programs, and especially if you don't use Internet Explorer, then you don't have to install it.

I can almost assure you though that later on down the track Microsoft will insist you install it in order to access any other future updates.

    I agree with Insomniac.

you wont be hurt (in fact you may be less prone to trouble) if you do not install it--so long as you are diligent and confident in your own ability to keep your system clean.

I'd save the installation until you reformat sometime in the future, since its always nice to make the major changes to the OS before its cluttered with other stuff.

Those whom the gods would destroy, they first make proud. Skim the SP2 stickies above, It will give you an idea of any problems you may have and, more important, how to avoid them.

Yes it is a good idea to install major service packs in the case of SP2 for XP its not just Internet Explorer security updates and the addition of a Security Center menu thats been updated.. those are the things that most people see.... its whats under the hood so to speak thats the real updates to the core of XPs programming.... in the two stickys on SP2, both Adrynalyne & Nick ADSL have linked to articles on whats changed in SP2.

if you follow all the precautions before installing the install shoudl go smoothly....
