Windows SP3 issue

OK, so I got an automatic update for SP3. I attempted to install it, but it told me that I could not because it could not find PROPLUS.msi. I couldn't find the CD but eventually I found a website where I could download the entire Office XP cabinet as well as the PROPLUS file itself.

I downloaded both and when I attempted to install SP3, I pointed it to the PROPLUS file - it accepted this, but then the install failed anyway. The next couple times I tried to install SP3, it did not ask for PROPLUS, it just said "install failed" with no more information.

Now, when I looked at "Properties" for My Computer, it says I am running SP3. But when I go to Add/Remove Programs, SP3 is not listed. In addition, I still get the automatic update notification and when I go to windows to search for the latest updates, it is listed there.

I don't know what to do with this

any help would be appreciated - thanks!

Thanks for the response - I just want to make sure I am doing this right before I change anything.

OK, so the current registry entry for example is:
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Common]
    "UserData"=0x00000001 (1)

and I should change the user data to dword:00000001, correct?

Also, I don't know if this typical, but under [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office], I have files for 10.0, 11.0, 12.0, 8.0 and then each of the programs themselves.

Finally, I don't know if this matters, but when I originally bought the computer I had Office Home and Student. I then later bought Office Pro and installed it and I now have both versions of Office installed on my computer - will this interfere with installing SP3?

    Thanks for your help!

im not sure if it will interfere with sp3 install, but it is generally reccommended to uninstall the old version to save hard disk space. perhaps uninstall them both, then reinstall the good version(backing up data you need like your emails from outlook first)

and im not sure because i dont see anything about reg editing in that link...?

Maybe I clicked on the wrong link.

Here is the text of the post that you sent me to:
    Visit http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm and scroll down
to Item No. 171 (right column) and click on "Office XP 1706 - ProPlus.MSI Fix.

When I click on that, I get a page with only this information:
I assumed that meant I had to edit the registry, but that seems to be not what you had in mind, so I must have clicked the wrong thing

    Hi

Just to try and rule out any conflicting information as you have Windows XP which has a Service Pack 3 (SP3) and Office XP that has also a Service Pack 3 (SP3) a few questions,

    1. What Office Versions do you have (easy option to find this is either in Add/remove or to actually open the Office programs as in Word, Excel etc and check in the Help > About)?
Asking this as ProPlus.msi is an Office installer file, and wondering while you had bought Office Pro (XXXX) you downloaded one and more so from where as do look for the original as depending on where you downloaded this Office version from it "may" not have the full package of file as it seems you managed to download the full Office XP in one download and seperatly downloaded the ProPlus.msi file, if this is not the case then do let us know.

    2. Check in Add/Remove and tick the Show Updates box and see if Service Pack 3 lists for Windows, may have the number KB936929 or click Start > Run and type winver and hit enter.

    3. What security software do you have installed, please list all?
Reason some can block installations, so disabling them can help

If this is more an Office thing then unhide files (in any folder click Tools > Folder Options > Click on the View tab and choose “Show Hidden Files and Folders” and press "Ok." )and check to see in the C drive root that you have an MSOcache folder and is ProPlus.msi in that folder?

This maybe a concequence of one of your other issues and those need clearning up first if your getting multiple faults with various system files to running the malware guide as you must suspect malware on your PC etc

Thank you for your response Halo

    1. OK, so my office 2003 Basic Edition is version 11.0.8173.0 - if I open Microsoft Office Word 2003 and click "about" it says it has SP 3.

Office XP Pro with Frontpage is version 10.0.2627.0. None of the programs say they have SP3 if I open them individually.

The reason I downloaded both the entire cabinet and the proplus.msi file individually was that when I downloaded the cabinet, I could not direct the microsoft update installer to the proplus.msi file. So I then downloaded just the file and put it on my desktop so that I could point the installer to it. I got the files from www.billynda.com, which I had found mentioned on another support forum - people specifically said it solved the problem I was having.

    2. When I checked the add/remove programs, Windows XP SP 3 was listed, and it was KB936929 as you suspected.

    3. I use the McAfee security suite - firewall, virus scan, real time protection, site adviser, etc. I have Adaware and Malawarebyte's, but I only use them for manually scanning - they do not use real-time protection, so they should not interfere with the windows updates. And I have never had a problem downloading or installing any other microsoft update. As far as I know, everything else is completely up to date.

I checked the MSOCache folder - it has other folders in it, but none of them contain the Proplus.msi file

I really apologize if I have caused confusion with my multiple posts. I thought this was a totally different issue since it has been going on for weeks and I just thought it was not having the CD. I am also trying to work through the malware removal guide because I do want to rule that out as a possibility.

    Thanks for all your help

    Hi

Ah ok, a little clearer now cheers.

Positives are that your Windows XP is SP3 and your Office 2003 is also at SP3, so this now just leaves Office XP with Frontpage and that version code you posted is the RTM original one, so likely as the SP3 version for Office XP is 10.0.6626.0 then whats being offered is indeed Office XP SP3 and here is the full download which may work better than the online one offered through Windows Update http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...FD-6F69-4289-8BD1-EB966BCDFB5E&displaylang=en

Its also likely that your Office 2003 MSOcache overwrote the Office XP one so if installing the Office XP SP3 update you may well be prompted for the proplus.msi off CD (which I know you dont have but see if you can again redirect the updater to that one you downloaded)

OK, so I downloaded and installed the file you pointed me to.

Office XP with Frontpage is now version 10.0.6626.0

when I restarted my computer, it again popped up the automatic update message and said I needed to install Office XP SP 3.

I think it is OK though because when I went to update.microsoft.com it had about 20 high-priority updates for office 2002 and office XP and SP 3 was not among them. I think I am in the clear!

    Thank you for your help
