    Howdy Major Geeks,

I am having a problem. Yesterday I got an M$ auto-update notice and let windows do its thing. Today when I turned on my computer I received the message,
    "Explorer.exe - Bad Image
The application or DLL C:\WINDOWS\System32\BROWSEUI.dll is not a valid windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette."

Now, when windows was shutting down it asked me to change an abtrusion protector setting, which I did, but honestly I did not really know what it was asking but I did what it said it wanted, I guess. I did not set Abtrusion to install when I installed windows update.

The error sounds like those generated by abtrusion protector when one tries to start an unauthorized program.

I tried getting into safe mode, safe mode w/ networking, and "last settings that worked", all produced the same error. Windows, when it opens, does nothing. All I can get is the task manager, which I use to restart.

System: XPsp2, Zone Alarm, Panda AV, spywareblaster, adaware: all up to date. And abtrusion protector, of course.

    Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Okay. Problem solved, up to a point.
Booted to CD, let ZA connect all the various things to internet, launched system restore, restored to yesterday morning. I am trying to update again, but its taking for-ever. I turned abtrusion off this time.

    Conversation with myself

    OOOPS! HOLD the PHONE!

When I go to shut down, the same dialog box appears as last night, here it is:

    "Abtrusion Protector:
Some important system files are not allwoed to execute. If you turn off your computer with these settings you may not be able to start it again
1 ignore and continue (not recommended)
2 don't continue with the operation
3 allow these files to execute and then continue
    c:\WINDOWS\System32\DRIVERS\tcpip.sys
    c:\WINDOWS\System32\shlwapi.dll"

    What to check?

    I am leaning towards 3.

    Ideas? Thanks, again

    Re: Conversation with myself

seems as if this Abtrusion program is blocking executables from running and installing/updating.

Option 3 is the one I would take.... but then again I would be more inclined to uninstall Abtrustion or make sure its stopped for the updates to be allowed to install properly.

edit: just read this FAQ from the makers of that app http://www.abtrusion.com/kb/upgrade_OS.asp
