Windows Update Error

I've been getting this error for the past couple of days: I don't know what's causing it, and it's not in the troubleshooter.

What is causing this error?

I tried their workaround with the registry, but that solved nothing.

It says to install a later service pack, but I refuse to use sp2 due to the amount of problems I had with it before.

Is there any other way to get updates?

 

Turn off firewall, while at windows update.
Also in internet options, Advanced tab, check box for: Use passive FTP (for firewall and DSL compatibility), check boxes for: SSL 2.0, SSL 3.0, TLS 1.0
Should do the trick.
I had same problem and same error on one rig, the above did the trick.
Sometimes Microsoft update page has some strange issues, if have problems try again lattor.

 

I didn't think Sygate was blocking win update, and all those ie settings are already set. I guess I'll try messing with Sygate.

 

Yup, I had Sygate set to block Generic Hosts processes. That was the problem.
