Well when I start windows update it hangs at 0%. I checked their help area and it said download some script which I did and it said repair IE. To do that it said go to add remove and click change/remove then repair. Under Add/remove I didn't find IE and well I couldn't "repair" it.

What I'm asking is how do I repair it or is their some other way to fix this problem?

I have windows XP, running no firewall when I try it and it has worked before. Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately, the Add-Remove/Repair thing only works if you've installed IE manually, upgrading from a prior version. Since WinXP comes with the latest version already riveted in place, itn's not in Add/Remove, and you can't do a repair.

Only way I know to globally "repair" IE in XP is to do a complete Windows XP repair/reinstall, which *should* repair IE.

    Do you really want to?

I'm done with it. After installing #811493 once and then with a patch to a patch, it still slowed down system. Dumped it for good. Just wait for SP2 CD and then maybe, all the MS bugs will be fixed.

Something to try as sometimes the ActiveX component of WU ( Windows Update ) can end up being corrupt...............

Delete your cookies, then find the "Update Class" ActiveX file in this folder C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files, delete it then go back to WU and start again you will find a Microsoft security notice will popup you must say ok/yes to this then all should be ok!

I had this same problem while on my cable connection to the Net. Searched around the MSKB and found this tasty item somewhere: If Win Update hangs at 0%, go to your home page (away from Windows Update), then open Internet Options (under Tools, of course), go to the Connections tab and the LAN Settings button, UNcheck Automatically Detect Settings, OK, OK. Now close IE, re-open it, and go back to Windows Update, and it should work.

The trick is this: for Win Update, that Auto-detect control should be OFF for cable and other HS connex, but for all other Microsoft sites (the Knowledge Base, Help and Support, etc.), it should be ON.

Try it and let us know. It just takes a sec to change the setting to OFF when you want to use WU, and after you're finished, re-set it with the checkmark.
