    hi

i recently starting having trouble with installing some windows updates. when i would install them and restart it would say "Failure configuring Windows updates. Reverting changes." it would reboot next and say it again and after that it would reboot properly. i would check windows update's list of updates and it would say the updates failed to install. i tried installing some updates at a time and that worked. i had 7 updates to install originally and now im down to one that wont install. the update is called, "Update for Internet Explorer Flash Player for Windows 8 for x64-based Systems (KB2824670)". I keep trying to install it but i get that message "Failure configuring Windows updates. Reverting changes." upon rebooting. I recently changed my flash player version on firefox. i was having problems viewing videos on youtube in high def again. that seems to be fixed tho now. i installed a earlier version of flash to fix that. i got that solution from someone on mozilla's forum. the version of flash i have on IE10 is "11.6.602.171". there is a newer version out but i cannot get it to install properly. i keep getting that dreaded message "Failure configuring Windows updates. Reverting changes." with that too.

    here is my specs:

    Windows 8 Pro
    AMD Phenom(tm) 9750 Quad-Core Processor 2.40 GHz
Installed memory (RAM): 8.00 GB (7.75 GB usable)
    64-bit Operating System, x64-based processor

im not sure if i really need this update since i very rarely use Internet Explorer. i pretty much always use Firefox browser instead. Hopefully someone can help solve this problem for me.

    thanks in advance.

    hi falcon

thanks for the tip. but what worked for me just now was i did a system restore back a few days ago. i think what caused the problem in the first place was that i uninstalled and reinstalled flash for firefox cause the current version was giving me problems. so now i was able to install all the windows updates including the one i mentioned.

however i have a new problem. this has been happening for a couple of days now. not sure what is causing it. in win 8 in the action center icon when i click on it located in the lower right hand corner, pc issue 1 message. it says view windows update settings. i have attached a picture of what i see in the next screen. i don't want to turn off the messages about windows update. but it seems it won't let me. it asks me to be a administrator but i am. im the only one who uses this computer. please take a look at the two pix i took from these screens. thanks.

EDIT: im not sure if i can ask about another problem in the same thread like i did in the second paragraph above. is that allowed? cause i really need to get this problem taken care of and if it's not allowed to ask about more than one problem in the same thread i'll just make a new thread. please someone let me know. thanks!

I don't think that's a problem, especially since the two are related.

However, it would be better if you attached the image directly, instead of a zipped file. This way we can just however the mouse pointer over it to see it.

can someone please help me with my problem? i need to set updates via windows update to automatically install. particularly windows defender updates cause ive been getting a lot of those lately. i think its a administrator priveleges issue. i am the only user on this computer and i am the admin but yet it seems that it still won't let me change the settings. im not sure if its a virus or what. im getting desperate. i really don't wanna reformat my computer yet again to get rid of this. cause i have a feeling it will happen again. if someone can give me a list of instructions step by step i would GREATLY appreciate it. or a link to a site that has step by step info. thanks in advance.

Windows 8 is still quite new. I use it myself and I'm learning more and more. But, I'm no pro.

    Anyway.
Go to start screen, type in cmd, hit enter, or click it. A new windows will appear.
    type in:

    net user > blah.txt
    notepad blah.txt
save it and attach it here.

Go to start screen, type in regedit (press enter) [yes]
    Migrate to HKey_Local_Machine\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies
    Export policies to send here.

    hi theefool

thanks a lot for the reply man. i was beginning to lose hope since no one was replying to this topic lately. anyway i have both attached. unfortunately and i hope this isn't a problem to you but the menu upload screen said i couldn't upload the reg file that i exported policies with so i made a zip of it. hopefully you will be able to help me solve this. i also been having a problem with Java lately but we can discuss that another time if you want.

I'm currently comparing your policies with mine. Since you have exported those registry keys, any changes I suggest can be re-added by running your michael.reg file.

Ugh, you are on pro, I'm on home. Time to upgrade on my part. I will see if I can do that now.

    Okay, I've upgraded to pro.

Another place to export and send here, please go to HKCU err HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\WIndows\CurrentVersion\Policies .
If there is something there, export Policies, and send here.

Only do the next section if there is NO "policies" entries at the above section. Otherwise, continue:

If not, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies and delete all sub keys.
    Aka. Active desktop, attachments, etc.

Then attempt to do the update. If it fails reboot, try again, fails, double click michael.reg, yes.

Export Internet settings, then delete it. Try it again.

edit: You may have to reboot.

Delete that key, then try again, if that doesn't work, reboot and try again.

    Try again = windows update.
