I wrote this in the following link a few days ago. I was told that my logs were clean and I should move on to the "Software" forum.

    Hello,
Go into control panel and remove the update under Programs, Uninstall a Program. At the left of the window select View Installed Updates. Remove that update and then go here to install manually. Hopefully this will solve the problem. I would install the update in an admin account also.

Unfortunately, part of my problem is that I cannot see any installed updates when I click "view installed updates". I can see them in the update history though. When I click "view installed updates" it says "there is no update installed on this computer. I'm running my netbook with an admin account. I also tried running "remove programs" as administrator through appwiz.cpl to no avail.

I downloaded the update through the link you provided. Should I give it a try without uninstalling? Should I try safe mode to install?

Sorry to not follow my own post very strictly but work work work. Thank you in advance.

There should be no problem installing the update over the existing one. I wanted to uninstall just be make sure it was gone before doing the install. Give it a try and see what happens. No need to be in safe mode.

I downloaded and installed it manually. Restarted the pc. Windows Update still offering it. Btw, there is no problem with other updates. I'm getting other updates and installing them without problems. They don't turn up to install again like this one does.

The first two methods gave catastrophic failure error (0x8000ffff). With the third method I get a false parameter error though I made sure by trying and checking twice. I also noticed another update that kept installing in the update history like this problematic one. That one is a definition update for MSE.

Yes, I was referring to console level with method 1, 2, and 3 in my previous post since the former methods didn't work (uninstalling through Windows update, add/remove program etc.). I wasn't clear on that I suppose.

wusa commands gave the catastrophic failure errors and pkgmgr command gave false parameter error. If we can't solve this, I'll try restore Windows 7 Basic to the day I bought with its in-built utility after some backing up.
