I have a new thread in Hardware about a DVDRW problem that probably belongs here in the software section... anyway: when I try to download and install WinXP Updates I initially got a message that the Windows Update files were not registered or had been removed, click OK to register or reinstall the files; so I clicked OK. It went to the next part where it describes a bit about Windows Update and has a button to click 'Install Now' (it might have been Download Now). So I clicked on that button and Update locks up. The mouse still moves, I can CTRL-ALT-DEL, I can click on things on the desktop, but Update just stops responding and the task mgr just says Update is runnning. When I end the task, I send the error to error reporting and it tells me that the problem is malware or 'helper' related (toolbars, etc...). It says I should install the updates to repair IE6. I can't!!! Any suggestions????????

Try the steps below and try the updates again.

    Click Start > Run > type: regsvr32 MSXML3.DLL > OK.

    To repair IE6:

Put your XP CD in and go to Start > Search

Make sure all the boxes including Advanced options are checked. Hidden files and sub-folders and the rest.

Search your Windows folder on your hard drive for ie.inf

When you find it Right Click it and choose install.

IE will be reinstalled from your XP CD.

    Try updates again.

Hey mata- I tried your tip and still no dice: it just stops responding but I can surf the web just fine.
bbath- the DVDRW (and an external CDRW) won't read any discs so your tip isn't going to work.. thanx anyway. I have another thread going about the optical drive problem and I'm getting nowhere with that. I think a reload of WinXP is in the near future....
    Thanx for your help guys

Found a small tool named IEFix on (link)
It repairs Internet Explorer by registering it's core DLL files..

For best results w/ IEFix, you need to read the XP CD, and the CD drive isn't reading correctly right now (see my other thread about optical drive problems)... thanx anyway though.... BTW- I can surf the web just fine; it's just Windows Update that locks up...

    Try these also:

    regsvr32 dispex.dll
    regsvr32 msscript.ocx
    regsvr32 vbscript.dll
    regsvr32 scrrun.dll

If it is IE that is the problem
you could always download IE6 or IE7 and reinstal

Do you have any toolbars running ?

I had Yahoo toolbar but one of the first things I did was remove it.... The strange thing is that I can surf the internet and download w/o any problems. I've re-registered all the .dll's numerous times. I haven't tried safe mode w/ networking yet... I'll try that and then at least I'll know... I don't know what I'll know but it's something to try.

Odd that no one suggested dial-a-fix:

    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4899

Extract, then run the dial-a-fix program.

Then click the "GREEN" check mark. Then press go. Any errors, please post here. :)

Also, this will bring up the date/time box. Make sure that the date/time is set correct, then press ok on that box. Let it go through its rythms.

Yeah... I tried Dial-A-Fix a couple of days ago.... still nothing.... I'm thinking that a safe re-install of the OS is needed. I have another thread going about the DVDRW not reading and it's on the same PC. The DVDRW works fine (I can boot to it and read from it in DOS), there's a big problem in Windows and reload is probably the only way to fix both the update problem and the DVDRW problem.

Thanx for all your help people :) I really appreciate it! But a reload is the only way to go here... Thanx again!

If you want to avoid reinstalltio of XP,
If you have a problem with updates try http://windowsupdate.62nds.com/,
It will give you a download for Firefox, and then, using Firefox you can download, from this (unofficial) site ,all the downloads, and it could solve the I E PROLEM downloads, you could then get rid of Firefox, if you wanted to keep I E EXPLORER.
