Windows update problem

I took the time to check out my friends computer and it was massively infected with over 100 trojans and over 300 different spyware programs. I ran multiple virus programs/spyware programs to get rid of everything. I reran everything in safe mode and i believe that it is clean. The problem is that he is running sp1 on winxp and windows update does not work at all. At the windowsupdate url the page is completely blank. If I change the url to v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com the page loads and says windows is checking if you have current software... but then it does nothing else. If I try to directly download a particular update it throws me an activex error. I have checked the activex settings and they are correct. Next I downloaded SP2 from my computer and burnt it to CD, after extracting it stops and says file not found and kicks me out. Does this sound like a virus that either disabled his activex and windows updates or one that attached itself to something important and was deleted by one of the virus scans thus corrupting the entire OS. Everything else seems to be running ok. I installed firefox and it finds the windowsupdate page, but obviously doesnt work. I appreciate the help.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but last time I checked, windows update was an IE only site...
All my past attempts to update with Firefox have failed. I've tried changing the user agent, updating all the plugins, etc, etc...nothing worked.
