    Hi all,
I can't seem to update windows anymore.
I get the "Files required to use Windows Update are no longer registered or installed on your computer"
I follow the prompts but it just loops around.
Also. My Computer takes ages to open.
    Thanks

Click Start > Run > and enter regsvr32 msxml3.dll > OK. Try windows update again.

    No luck with that.

Try this one using the same method, regsvr32 wuauserv.dll

If Steve's suggestion doesn't work ....and you are missing files ....
start / run / type "sfc /scannow" without qoutes and have your xp disc handy ...run twice just to be sure.

    Or download, Dial-A-Fix:

    Run, dial-a-fix.

Check the box under "WU/WUAU", titled "Fix windows updates".

Then click the GO button. Give this a shot!

This may take a bit of time to run through.

Woot! Worked with Dial-A-Fix. I think I must be missing files. I had 61 updates!
I am having problems with My Computer opening. I just get the torch.
I will run a sfc/scannow to try and fix this. I'll do it twice.
    Thanks Steve, Tim and Thee

Hmm. Now sfc /scannow doesn't seem to work.
Just a brief glimpse of the cmd screen then nada. Tried after a reboot and the scanning bar appears but nothing happens then it disappears

Make sure that Caps lock is not on, that can cause it to flash and disappear sometimes.

    Caps lock wasn't on.
Did an XP repair but same problems.
My Computer takes ages to open.
Happy to keep trying other suggestions. Not desperate to reinstall XP yet.
    Any other ideas?

Bitdefender agree to the license and then select Scan. DO NOT CHANGE THE OPTIONS TO SHOW ALL FILES SCANNED. That will make your logs huge and we don't need to see clean files. Once Bitdefender completes the scan:

Click-on the Detected Problems tab. Then select Click here to export the scan report

When the window comes up to save the report, change the Save as type: box to Text (Tab Delimited) (*.txt) and then in the File name box enter change to bdscan then click save. This will save a file named bdscan.txt in whatever folder you are currently in when you save the file (take notice of where you are at so you can find it later). This bdcan.txt file will actually contain HTML code that we can easily view later while reviewing your log. All we have to do is rename the file to bdscan.html.

I ran the scan before with the read and run me but have run it again.
    Here are both reports.

Hmm. Wouldn't let me attach the previous scan. Do you want to see it? Renaming doesn't work.

I realized that where the virtual drive from daemon tools was there is just a system folder which doesn't open.
I tried to uninstall daemon tools but couldn't via their uninstaller so I did it manuallly from the instructions off the daemon website. Didn't help the hang on trying to open My Computer but I think this may be the problem

Renamed a registry entry related which seems to have fixed the problem.
    Some other problems I have.
    logical disk manager doesn't open.
Services takes a long while to open.
Deleting hangs for a while but eventually works.
