Windows Update Problems

Hi, I am currently having problems updating windows. The university I attend uses the "SmartEnforcer Client" in order to sign on to the internet. However, they require that we do windows and other software updates from time to time. The client allows me to get online to a restricted set websites for 2 hours at the time until I can download the proper updates. The client advises me to go to the following website to update windows "http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com", but when I go to that website, my browser simply freezes up and reverts to 'not responding'. My windows automatic updates appear to be turned on, but they are not actually downloading the updates. And I know that I should be using Internet Explorer to download the updates instead of Mozilla, but I am having the problem with Internet Explorer. Do you have any idea what my problem could be?

System: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 1
Pentium 4 CPU 2.26 GHz 512 MB of RAM 40 GB harddrive
Mozilla Firefox & Internet Explorer

Well the weblink is certainly correct for the Windows Update. I'd guess that there's some kind of problem with the security system that your University is using. Do you know if it's a firewall? Are you remotely connecting to the network or are you using a network point??

 

As far as I know, the Windows XP windows update website is version 5, not the v4. In Internet Explorer, go to Tools > Windows Updates, and follow through the steps on the resulting web page. Their program may not know about the new version of the update website..
