I'm having a similar issue. I have a new HP computer (jul08) with XP. I cannot make a connection to the microsoft update site, my progressive insurance website and other secure websites. I keep getting a window that says the page cannot be found. I made sure the SSL options were clicked in internet options ect ect ect. Friend at work has the same exact issue. She brought her computer to the local repair shop. Per that shop, she had a corrupted cryptographic service. How does one fix that?

Yes, I did follow the instructions per 958050. Found those on a different thread. Still did not fix the problem. I have not seen the instructions per 833798. I printed them out to follow later tonight when i get home from work.

My home computer will not connect to the microsoft site that has those instructions, I'm at work (supposedly working). Keep getting the "page can't be found" message. Same message I receive when I try to pull up the microsoft update, progressive website, and other https sites.

Here's the wierd part. I installed a brand new HDD. Ran the HP restore disks. Still can't connect to the sites. I thought for sure, installing a brand new HDD would of solved the issue. New install, fresh registry blah blah blah. NOpe.

    Any thoughts?

I"m going to physically bring my computer to a known good internet connection (wifes work) and see if I have the same issue. I'm trying to rule out the internet provider connection.

I'd say that was a good idea, and also if that PC is only one on and having issue on the Home Internet connection then, reset the modem router.

Well, I brought the computer to a known good internet connection......works just fine. Yeah! Rats!

    Yeah! The computer works. :-D

Rats! All those hours wasted trying to fix something that wasn't broke. :cry

Turns out, my original hunch was correct. The wireless internet bridge was messed up. Exchanged the bridge for a new one...installed it at home.....works like a champ.

Up until 0130 hours installing sw and updates. Still have another long night left.

Lesson learned: be more forceful with the internet provider. Don't understand why the wireless bridge would act like that, but it did and must be some sort of glitch in the HW becuase the support guy (Andrew) listened to my long explanation of what is happening, what I have done, and was quick to tell me to exchange the bridge.

I really hope this helps someone else (especially those that use Chaska.net as their ISP). :wave
