I have an update from Windows updates that simply won't seem to take. I've had tried to install is both with the Express Method, the Custom Method (within automatic updates) and going to the windows update website.

In all cases, it says it has updated successfully, but lo and behold, a few minutes later, there it is again in my taskbar...

The updates in a 'Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 (KB936181)

    Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance!

That sadly did not work... Its back again.

Could something be 'blocking' the updates?

    Thanks,

I have the same problem, but with another update. I will be following this thread closely.

Yes on blocking, majority of Security software like AV, Firewall and the likes of Spybot S&D can block Windows Updates, so to test disable those applications and run the already downloaded update.

Run CCleaner and clear your temp folders etc.

Did you reboot after the install?

Check Add/Remove for that update actually being installed. uninstall it then if the yellow shield is in your tray alerting you to this update, install via clicking the yellow shield.

T-Shooting this from MSKB http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=910339 and this one http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927978 and using this one uninstall MSXML 4.0 from add remove and by the removing the DLL as described here, then install the update again.

Ok, I tried closing windows and it attempted to install the update.

Upon reboot, the update was there again, uninstalled.

It was not present in the Add/Remove programs thing in the control panel before or after this....

I ran CCleaner, tried to install with the Yellow shield... it said it was successful. Moments later, the update was back.

So I tried closing windows, and it again 'installed' the update while closing.

After turning the computer back on, it is, yet again, back....

And yes, no antivirus or spyware software was running at anytime during this in the task bar.

I could literally uninstall AVG, Spybog, WinDefender, and Adaware, but that seems ridiculous... They are not running in the taskbar while I am attempting to install the update...

    This seems very weird...

Yes very weird and I seem to have noticed a few threads like this lately, just thinking WU is acting funny as I know they have been updating it to fix the Automatic Updates being turned back on when users didnt want it senario.

I agree with you on turning off security software and I never turn mine off when installing updates, but one I feel could be a possibel cause is Spybot as it does block registry entries, mainly its TeaTimer function, so I would make sure not just its not running in the systray but also that none of its processes are running, there are time we think we have turned off an application from the systray and find its still running some processes.

or try installing the update downloaded in Safe Mode.

I don't have TeaTimer installed so that's not the issue and I have already tried installing manually.

I guess I'll try in safemode...

I'm just concerned there may be a virus or something involved here, though I recently had a virus issue which the experts here cleaned up and game me a clean bill of health.

However, this update isssue coincided with the malware/virus issue so I wonder if something was changed or is still hanging around....

Javaslinger, your computer is probably clean. From time to time you will read that some people have problems getting one or two windows updates to install either by auto update or even trying to install manually. It is just the quirkiness of windows updates working. :foolish
