What version and Service Pack is your Windows?

Do you get any error messages at all if so what, also look in Windows Update History for errors.

Do other applications of yours update ok (try a few that have regular updates), say your antivirus?

Disable your Firewall and Antivirus and see if you can connect.


Could try some of this HERE, but Windows version and any error messages will help narrow this down.

 

How much RAM in the computer?
I was trying to update a computer that had only 256MB RAM and update ran for more than 30 minutes, all the while the hd was churning.
I thought it wasn't doing anything but eventually, an icon appeared in the tray area informing me that there were 9 updates ready to be installed.
10 minutes might not be enough time if there are several updates and some of them are large.
