Windows Updates not configuring and reparse errors

Hi all...I am back. I have been working with chaslang on the Malware forum to clean up a machine I got free from a friend. It is running Windows 7 version 6.1.7601 Svc Pack 1. Please see thread here if you need this info.

    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?p=1908159&posted=1#post1908159

I had also posted the reparse errors originally on this forum but will not repost that info as it is referenced in the thread with chaslang. Saving bandwidth. See I am learning!

My first unresolved issue is that I can download and install Windows Updates, but they usually will not configure. Once I restart machine to complete the update it says Failure to Configure Updates Reverting Changes. Then it tries again, and fails again, before actually starting up and loading my desktop. I have run several Microsoft Mr. Fixits, and Tweaking.com Window Repair, and nothing has repaired this problem. I don't get any error codes anymore, just Failed. I try to only do 3 or 4 at a time and once in a while an update does succeed but it is rare. I started with 71 updates and am now showing only 29 as of today. I don't know what happened to most of them for only about maybe 15 have actually succeeded! I went to the Microsoft download site and ran the KB number and tried to manually install several but each one came up and said not needed for my computer or something similar to that and I gave up.

Also, my original post shows that I have some reparse errors. I don't know if those affect my machine or not, but if I can clean them up I would like to know. If I need not worry about them, I won't.

Any help is appreciated and if you need further info, please just let me know.

    Thanks!

The updates may have prerequisites that need to be installed first and Windows Update would install them in proper order. I've tried doing the manual install by KB number myself and know from personal experience that it doesn't work.

As far as the reparse errors, have you run chkdsk /f?

Thank you mdonah for getting back to me. I am slow responding because I have been busy (had to watch Survivor too!). Will tell you what I have done and some FYIs in case anything stands out to you.

First, I finished my thread with chaslang and reset everything I was asked to do. Then I ran CCleaner, Disk Cleanup, Defraggler, Malwarebytes, and Microsoft Security Essentials. I also ran a sfc /scannow command and scheduled and ran a chkdsk. Everything showed up as fine. After doing that the computer tried to configure updates after the restart, but failed and took almost two hours to revert changes. Arrgh. Two optional updates (virus definitions) succeeded, 20 failed. Hey at least the amount keeps going down!

Once I was back at the desktop I saw your message and I ran the command scan /f that you suggested. Guess all was well, I was not at desk when it closed. But then same procedure, computer tried to configure updates again on restart, and failed, reverted changes. I then did a clean boot and ran Windows Update Diagnostic that I had downloaded last week. Diagnostic showed me error 80070057 not fixed and Problems Installing Recent Updates not fixed, but Service Registration Missing or Corrupt was fixed. I then tried to install the lowest numbered update and it failed.

FYIs - each time I start Windows I see the messages Shutting Down Windows Update Service and Please wait for Windows Module Installer. And just to add, the updates number from KB285something to KB292something. I have previously successfully downloaded updates numbering in the KB300somethings. Don't know if that helps you or not.

I thought I would try to start in safe mode and see if I could update from there but am not holding my breath. Mostly will wait to hear back from you.

Thanks again. Let me know if you need more info!

    1. Turn off automatic updates.
    2. Never try and do all updates at once.
    3. Check the list of updates it says you need and do them by years and months. If any from 2014 are needed, do the older month before the newer. Reboot, even if it doesn't tell you to do so.
    4. Check for updates again. Now you should be down to 2015 updates. But, if any are shown from 2014 or earlier, do them and Reboot again.
    5. Do January 2015 updates and reboot.
    6. Do February 2015 updates and reboot.
    7. DO NOT do all of March at one time. Do 3033929 last and by itself. This has to be installed after another update, 3035131. Some people ended up getting into a reboot loop. You don't want that after all the cleaning and malware removal is done.

Thank you plodr for replying. I have my updates set to notify me when new ones are available but let me choose to download and install. I also have no hidden updates until today. I have been a busy girl...here are the results:

I started the day with 22 updates. Ten of them were from various months in 2013! I tried downloading them one by one, in date order, and all would download and install but not configure. Not a one. I tried the first few twice even. And no error number?

So started with the first of the 2014's. January had one and it would not configure. I guess because it downloaded and installed but not configured, no error number was given? February and March each had one and they installed successfully. April had three, two succeeded and one failed. Tried a couple of times. Then May had one and November had 3, all succeeded. No other updates were found except one for a printer no longer attached to this computer, and one for graphics that said I had newer driver already on machine, so I hid those two.

So I am now down to 12 updates. Should I hide them and forget them? I mean, I have already installed updates from this year evidently as there were no 2015 updates showing. I don't show a KB3033929 on my history but it only covers today as I ran all the cleaners and the update repair last night. It may have already installed or not yet offered? But updates must be working ok or I couldn't install anything right? Or - any other suggestions?

    Thanks again!

Post the KBs of these 12 and I will do some research to see what they are. (We are having a snowstorm here today so I'm not going anywhere!)

I hide all hardware and drivers that MS suggests. I got burned years ago by installing one - twice and lost internet access. No more!

I printed out the list and will look them over. Thanks so much for supplying the dates; it really helps.

Actually, after having 5" - 6" of snow yesterday, today the temps are supposed to go up to 50. It is a crazy start to spring! Everything is still covered with white including the trees.

I started with the Sept 2013 update 2853952 and found some threads where people had a problem installing this.
The suggestion was to run the System Update Readiness tool. I see you ran some sort of Update Diagnostic tool - if that is what I pointed you to, then skip it and the September update.
    So go here https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/947821/en-us
download and install then try Sept 2013 update again.

For the 5 October 2013 updates, I found lots of threads that point to 2862335 as being the problem.
Try to install the 4 other October 2013 updates, reboot and if they install, try the last one 2862335.

I'm off to find solutions for the three December 2013 updates.

Dec 2013 2887069 do this alone and turn off your antivirus when you install it.
So, I'd suggest you download the update
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=41289
disconnect from the internet then try to install it. Reboot and make sure your av is running then try and install 2893294 and 2891804

Jan 2014 Hide it. It has been issued multiple times.
Here's a thread that mentions Susan Bradley said to WAIT on this and 6 months later did not change her recommendation. (I usually go to her for update advice). http://windowssecrets.com/author/susan-bradley/

    April 2014
    here's an old thread
    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=285715
where I mention if you are not running Pro, hide the update.

Ok my cold, chilly friend. Weather is wild huh? Don't know where you are but I am in Oklahoma, we don't get much snow but have had lots of ice. Crazy. And we have times with a 30-40 degree difference from day to day. Tip: Buy stock in Puffs! Stay warm and comfy!

As for the updates, geez. I have followed your instructions to the letter. I had previously downloaded the System Readiness tool and gotten the message "Not applicable to your computer". But I thought...well...so re-downloaded it and ran it, it failed. Tried one more time and it worked!

I have gotten everything downloaded except:

KB2853952 from Sept, will hide it. Oct KB2862335 and KB2868038, and Dec KB 2887069. Jan and Apr 2014 I hid.

Making progress! I tried several times to install them. Don't know what the problem is. Tomorrow I will try again but it is going on 3am here and I am bushed. Will let you know what happens.

Thank for all your effort...working yourself silly but it is so appreciated!

I'm in PA but not in the Poconos where snow is not uncommon in March. Daffodils should be blooming now but they have just started to peek through the ground. I expect they will eventually appear in mid-April.

Actually my husband thinks that trying to solve computer problems will prevent me from getting Alzheimer's. I'm in my late 60's, retired and enjoy helping people solve computer problems and learn more about a computer.

So we are down to three problem installs Oct. 2862335 and 2868038 which are part of .NET 3.5.1 .NET updates can be a problem at times. And Dec 2887069 which is a kernel update; kernel updates are also a headache at time.

Let me know if you were able to install any of those three. Who knows, maybe if you check updates again they will disappear.

I am in my 60s also plodr, and if this update problem is ever over, neither of us should ever have to worry about Alzheimer's!! LOL

Ok new day. Same headaches. Those three updates did not install again. Did exactly as you asked but they just wouldn't go. And FYI...seems somewhere I saw that I have Microsoft NET Framework 4.5.1 if that means anything. I could be wrong, seen so many files lately.

THEN: 4 new updates popped up. They were from Feb (3) and Mar (1) of 2015. I thought a very nasty word. I was afraid all 71 of those suckers were gonna jump back in the game. But I clicked to view the download history to make sure the updates had really failed and when I clicked back...the 4 new ones had DISAPPEARED! (insert theme from Twilight Zone here)

    So....?

I don't know what to think at this point! As I often say, "I will never understand computers". Windows updates more so.
You probably do have .NET 4.5.1.
I would expect that if updates to that fixed things, the .NET 3.5.1 updates would disappear. (.NET is not cumulative; you can have several versions on a computer and different programs may only work with a certain version. Yup .NET is messy).

Let's see what you have. These tools are only to verify.
    Go here http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2008/10/13/8999004.aspx
and scroll down to download location to download from either location and see what is installed.

Don't download or use this yet. This is a cleanup tool.
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2008/08/28/8904493.aspx

And if things are cleaned off, it is hard getting them back on so I avoid this tool.

Windows 7 came with .NET 3.5 All of our Win 7 computers have 3.5.1. On only one computer do I have 4.5, probably because when I bought it (it's the newest) it was installed. It is too hard to remove so I kept it on. Also to further complicate things, .NET 4 and .NET 4.5 can't coexist. If you have 4.5 and something complains it needs NET 4, you can not get it to install. As I said, .NET is a real mess!

When you tried to do the December 2887069, did you turn off your av program?

  15. Mwcats

    Mwcats Private E-2

Ok plodr. Tried to install after a clean boot first thing today. No go. Got your message and went to the first site and downloaded file (hope I got the right one, there was a zip file at bottom but that is not what I downloaded). I am attaching the file because I am completely out of my league with this. When I first ran the tool it said "verifying .NET Framework 2.0 SP2". Just in case that tells you something. But I noticed in looking over the log there are several versions installed. You're right..Messy!

And yeah, when I try to do the Dec update I disconnect Internet and turn off AV each time.

    Thanks for your time!

I pulled the following from all of that
Install state for .NET Framework 1.0: not installed.
Install state for .NET Framework 1.1: not installed.
Install state for .NET Framework 2.0: installed with service pack 2.
Install state for .NET Framework 3.0: installed with service pack 2.
Install state for .NET Framework 3.5: installed with service pack 1.
Install state for .NET Framework 4 Client: installed with no service packs.
Install state for .NET Framework 4 Full: installed with no service packs.
Install state for .NET Framework 4.5: installed with no service packs.
Install state for .NET Framework 4.5.1: installed with no service packs.
Install state for .NET Framework 4.5.2: installed with no service packs.

Not adding product '.NET Framework 1.0' because it is not currently installed
Not adding product '.NET Framework 1.1' because it is not currently installed
Not adding product '.NET Framework 1.1 SP1' because it is not currently installed
Not adding product '.NET Framework 2.0' because it is not currently installed
Not adding product '.NET Framework 2.0 SP1' because it is not currently installed
Not adding product '.NET Framework 3.0' because it is not currently installed
Not adding product '.NET Framework 3.0 SP1' because it is not currently installed
Not adding product '.NET Framework 3.5' because it is not currently installed

The rest of the log file is devoted to the oldest .NET 2.0.2
Verification succeeded for product .NET Framework 2.0 SP2

    Bottom Line: you have .NET 2.0.2, 3.0.2, 3.5.1, Full and client for 4, 4.5, 4.5.1 and 4.5.2

Take the verifier tool, and select only 3.5.1 and see what sort of log it gives.
The two updates from Oct. 2013 that you can't install deal with 3.5.1

If I don't see anything in the log, then I'll have you hide those two updates. <sigh>

Ok, here is the scan results from verifier. It only gave me the option for 3.5 (among the others) so hope it is right.

And hiding updates is good at this point - I have almost lost all my hair! rolleyes

Well the last line in that log says
I have no more ideas because it doesn't show any problem. Hide those 2 updates.

Tomorrow I'll look again for the Dec. 2013 kernal update and see if I can find any new info. 2887069.

When issued it was bad, people lost sound!

Hi plodr! Me again. I have been doing some research too and am attaching some notes I picked up from various places, mostly Microsoft articles and forums. I expect you have better resources. I also found out that I could view details of the failed updates from the update history (live and learn) and have included the error messages but they seem to be pretty generic. But thought I would show you and maybe it sparks something. I haven't done anything and won't until you tell me too. Now that's trust!

I'll have to study that. I found a really long thread of 21 pages where the cure seems extreme! First uninstall all the sound drivers because apparently this update caused sound to disappear! Then install the update the install the sound drivers. Sorry but that advice sounds just plain nuts to me.

Can you check and see if this update that was re-issued in January 2014 was installed?

  22. Mwcats

    Mwcats Private E-2

I am getting so tired of Microsoft!!!

Okay, today I reran scan disk and check disk /r /f. Shows no errors. I then downloaded and re-ran the Windows Repair All-In-One tool (Tweaking.com) as it is a new version supposed to clean reparse issues (and I hoped helped download the updates). Fixed only a few reparse errors...up to 68 now from 37...geez. Then tried the 3 updates again (Oct and Dec 2013). The Jan and April (2014) updates you had told me to hide.

This is getting ridiculous. What happens if I just forget these? I know I shouldn't but they just aren't working plodr. Computer seems to be working well. So let me know your thoughts.

  23. plodr

plodr MajorGeek Super Extraordinaire Moderator Staff Member

    My thoughts, hide them.

I know one is a security update that should install. Chances are MS will re-issue it, using the same number a few months from now and it will install.

I think it is time to admit defeat and hang up the boxing gloves. I hate to be a quitter and I think you are that way too. But we have spent long hours trying to fix the unfixable. I agree with you. I am just going to hide them and forget them and deal with whatever comes (so don't have a heart attack if you see my name again). The new update from yesterday installed like a dream and the virus definitions do too, so is not the Windows Update program itself. But I have learned so much - especially to not automatically install updates and to research them before installing! Only Microsoft could get away with running a business this way.

And the same with the reparse errors. The list grows and I have a very vague knowledge of them. And if Shane's tool didn't fix them then I think it would be a long drawn-out process to do so. The computer is running well and I haven't encountered any problems surfing, playing games, etc. So I can live with that. Besides it was free, and supposed to only be for backup.

I feel like I have made a new friend and will miss our daily contacts! I cannot thank you enough - I posted a message in the Welcome forum and your "boss" answered me. I will keep my notification status open...Just In Case.

Truly ---THANK YOU! Take care of yourself, stay warm, and start gathering seeds for spring planting.
