Is there any way to update Windows XP without going online? For example, can a person download all XP updates since SP2, burn them to a CD, then somehow direct Windows Update to browse the CD (or the files copied from CD to the HD) for necessary updates, rather than go online?

I know that you can download the updates, but then what do you do with them?

I would think this would be handy for someone who is on dial up or who wants to get their system secure before going online.

The best thing to do is to see if you can get suitable protection like an Antivirus, Spyware Program and Firewall. Just download them on another PC (freinds/library) then transfer the setup files to your pc on a CD/DVD/Flashdrive and install them. Then when you connect you will be pretty much protected.

Switch on your Automatic updates for Windows. As soon as you get online, the updates will start to download. it will take a few hours to download and install them all. When youve done, say, the first 50 (not exact) it may ask you to reboot, then when you reboot there may be some more. This may happen a few times over as certain updates require other updates to be completed beforehand.

Just dont go browsing etc. untill its all completed. Its safe I think. I had to do it myself when I first went online.

Also it is possible to make a slipstreamed disk with XP and all the updates on it. Here is a link to some software you can do it with, i have a tutorial but unfortunately its in a magazine :( Im sure there will be advice etc on the site:-

This doesn't have this months updates. But, after ye have installed xp sp2, then install this, you'll be good to go.

So how does this work exactly? Is an executable that is run after XP w/SP2 is installed? Do you slipstream?

Do a lot of folks do it this way?

I may be reinstalling XP on a machine several times as I do some experimenting, and even though I have DSL, I hate waiting for all of those updates.
