System is XP Pro, SP3. I have 3 Windows updates that will not take. I have the icon on my toolbar saying updates are ready for your computer, etc. I have run the updates several times and the icon still remains. I've also run the MS Fix It program which after completed, says problem resolved. When going to the MS site for updates, there are 3 high priority updates ready to be installed but installing them here is also fruitless. However, what is also stated here is:
Download size 0 KB with estimated download time of 0 minutes. I just want to get rid of the update icon on my tool bar. Any help will be appreciated.

Updates for Windows XP are usually performed via the Windows or Microsoft Update website rather than via the control panel. However, since you are using XP Pro, do you have a WSUS server from which updates are distributed from?

Do you have the KB numbers of the updates that didn't take? and does manually installing the items listed in the MS KB (Microsoft Knowledge Base) resolve the issues?

If you run Windows Update from your Start menu, when the available updates appear first uncheck the problem update and a box will be available not to show it again.

State the kb items. If one is kb2807986 hold off on that. It has to do with a kernel and I read something about problems with some graphics cards.
I haven't installed this on any of my XP and 7 computers. I'm waiting to get more info.

Thanks for the replies. History shows these updates being successfully updated 3 times. The updates in question are KB2789643, KB2742596, and KB2729450. I've tried all the suggestions presented but to no avail. As I mentioned, all 3 updates show 0 KB download size and 0 download time on the MS download site. There is also a note by each one stating "this update has already been downloaded to your computer but if you select it, it will finish installing (recommended).

    KB2789643 offered repeatedly
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...stalling/da58cec3-cbbf-4178-b268-6d59310ba4c4
    which led me here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910339
Scroll down until you see XP and expand.
Was the fixit you ran on that page?
If not, try it. If so, move on to the next two steps.

Check to be sure you have .NET2 SP2
This tool will help you determine what versions and SPs of .NET are installed.
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2008/08/28/8904493.aspx
You run it as if you were going to cleanup (remove something). It lists what is on the computer. You can quit after you've noted what is on without changing any of the .NET components.

2742596 another .NET2 but this from January, whereas the above was from February.
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...t-is-not/b5a576cd-967e-4cbb-81ff-dd8e367489b9

2729450 an even earlier .NET 2 update, from November 2012.

Plan of attack: do the last update first, 2729450 and reboot, even though it says it is not needed.
If it doesn't install, go to the url listed at the first update http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910339
and run through the troubleshooting steps. Reboot, then try just this one update again.

If it succeeds, try the 2nd update in the list 2742596.

I have one XP computer in the house with .NET 2 but I do not have SP2 on it. I stuck with .NET2 SP1 so I was not offered two of those updates.
I was offered 2789643 and I installed it at the end of Feb 2013.

Thanks again. The MS Fix is the same one I ran before. Interestingly, 5 new updates were available so I installed them along with the problem 3. The 5 took but the same 3 problems ones did not. As far as installing them individually, I cannot find that option. It's all or none.

As far as .NET2 SP2, I started running it but shut it down as I didn't understand it except for deleting files.

Open up IE and copy this into the address bar
    Code:
    http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us
Click the Custom button and wait while it scans your computer.
When the 3 updates appear, uncheck all but one and click install.
You'll get another screen with a review showing just the one update and its size. Click install again.

Thanks again, but they will not install individually either. When shutting down, the system tries to install them but to no avail.

Have you turned off automatic updates?

  12. Jud149

    Jud149 First Sergeant

I just turned auto updates off. So your saying to just manually update periodically and forget about the 3 problem items?

  13. plodr

plodr MajorGeek Super Extraordinaire Moderator Staff Member

Now that you've turned off auto updates, fire up Microsoft update from the program list go to the site, click custom, let it scan and pick one update, 2729450 if it is listed.
I've been updating XP this way on several computers for years. You can select just one update.

When i got a new computer and needed to update XP, something like 89 updates were listed. I did about 30 at a time until i finally had all the updates I wanted.

Still a no-go. Funny, they show as taking on history update each time I've tried yet still remain on the high priority update list.

Yes, I'm using Comodo firewall and AV. I'll turn them off and give it another shot. Many thanks for the reply.

Thanks once again. Re my log, Avast is not running as it was deleted some time ago. I did remove the item, though, from my HJT log. The other items u questioned in the log are known and are okay.
I did uninstall Comodo as u suggested, both the firewall and AV, then ran CCleaner, and then again attempted to run the MS updates. Unfortunately, they again did not take. As I mentioned, though, each time I try the updates they show in the MS log as taking. Interestingly, I counted about 100 updates of KB2729450 with the other 2 problem updates I'm sure being equal in count on the log. These are from updates I've been trying since they were first available back in Nov., 2012. I wonder if this could have anything to do with them not taking. Another mystery is that now when using MS MRFixIt to fix the problem, he says he has run into a problem (lol) and to try again later which I've done to no avail.
Anyway, I very much appreciate your help. You're a trooper. Jud

Out of curiosity, when running these updates, what does event viewer say about the failure?

  24. Jud149

    Jud149 First Sergeant

The vast majority of times the MS update log will show the updates as taking. But there are a few times it will show them not taking with error codes of
    of OX652 or OX800705AA.

  25. theefool

    theefool Geekified

I THINK that system restore is failing here.

So option one. Disable system restore, then re-enable it. Try the update again.
Option two. Restore to a previous point, and try again.
Option three. Disable system restore. install updates.

Either way COULD be risky. I'd backup and try either one.

Essentially, any time you do an update, the computer will do a system backup. If that fails, you will get an error, and the update will fail. There are other EXTREME methods that may get around this, but MicroSoft doesn't support them.

  26. Jud149

Thanks. Actually I'm a little leery of disabling system restore as it states it wipes out all restore points when this is done. What I've done is blocked the updates from being shown as current uninstalled updates. This is probably not the best thing to do but I'm tired of screwing around with them. All other updates are taking normally. Apparently I'm not the only one with this problem as Googling them will attest. Thanks again.
