I've heard that DirectX 10 will only be available through Win Vista.

Does this mean that it will initially be available only through Vista or that it is looking at only ever releasing it through Vista.

Just wondering if like older versions of DirectX, if new games that support DirectX 10 will offer DirectX 10 and any updates with it.

Also is it likely that DX10 will ever be available for Win Home Edition.

And final question, is there anyway possible for the GeForce 7900 Series to support DX10?

    Thank you :)

Currently, the only DX10 cards, are the nvidia 8800 series.
Vista will have DX10 installed with it, but xp will not.
Vista will have a dx9 software emulator, to allow playing ancient ( :) )DX9 games, but not as well as xp with dx9 hardware/software. (Supposedly). But, some say, since this will be labeled DX9L, it will be faster than XP. Who knows?
Halo 2 for pc is VISTA only. (Last I read).

Note, this maybe confusing, but this is from the top of my head.

No, VISTA does not require a DX10 video card. :) But, to take the full "advantage" of dx10, you will need one.

Ok, so no winXP will never support DirectX 10.

And no the GF7900 series will never be able to run DirectX 10.

That leaves me with a big decision then...

I am currently buying a new computer.

I have a choice between getting the GF 7950GT or the 7950GX2.

The GX2 is going to be double the price, and is simply two 7950GT GPUs in one card.

I can't "really" afford the GX2, but I'm thinking about getting it anyway.

The thing is, is there really any point in getting the GX2?

    1) I'm only going to be using a 19' LCD monitor, so I have no use for the higher resolutions.

    2) I mostly play MMO's (Guild Wars and DDO) and as far as I'm aware I can pretty much run full quality on the GT.

So what I really need to know, and which I know is simply going to be conjecture, but how quickly do you think developers are going to start issuing DirectX 10 required games, and specifically expansions for MMOs.

For instance, Guild Wars Nightfall has only just now come out. Guild Wars is scheduled to release a new expansion (which is always a stand alone game that connects to the previous ones) every 6 months. So what are the chances that the next expansion that is released will be DirectX 10 only and I won't be able to play it until I upgrade to Vista and a GF 8000 series graphics card?

Simply put, is getting the GX2 going to be a complete waste of money as any new game that would benefit from having the GX2 over the GT will be utilizing DirectX 10 and thus I won't be able to play the freakin thing anyway?

I'm pretty much in the same boat as ye are. Since in 2 months, I'll be getting a new computer. Leaning towards the 8800 GTS.

But, I am running vista, with a BFG 6800 OC.

So, will I be able to play DX 10 only games? No. When are those games coming out? Unreal tournament 2007 and crysis will be DX10 (also a few others) only games, and seeing the following link, :

"forces" me to buy the 8800 gts (not a fan of ATI).

But, so are those who want to play PS3 games, forced to buy a ps3! ;)
