Windows Vista Network problems

ok i just got a new pc with windows vista home premium 64 b. and i have a laptop with windows xp media center. now that my pc connects to the network the laptop wont reconize or says it has little or no conductivity, but when i shut down the pc and then try the laptop, it works just fine, but the pc will not. i tried a static ip address and wont work and relized the crazy ip address i had, tried to change but always the same.

im not sure if this is the problem, but never seen it before myself so thought it might be. Not sure where to go from here, plz help.

 

If this is a simple a home network, you do not use a static IP. A private IP is used, setup by your modem if your on DSL. The static IP is assigned by your internet service provider

Go to Stat > Run and type cmd , then type ipconfig /all

What IP address is given here?

You'll probably need to go into the modem or router, you'll need a password, but you should be able to change it here.
