    Hello,

I can work normally while using the computer, but if I leave the computer idle after 15 minutes aprox. the computer restarts by itself.
I didn't get to see it in the moment it is rebooting as usually I am not close.

Sometimes restart normally and sometimes a black screen with the message Press f1 To continue,f2 to Run the setup utility. Press f5 to run onboard diagnostic

but only work f2 and after shut it down and turn it on again everything works fine till the next idle moment.

This problem started last week after a windows update so I wonder if that could be a clue...

    Dell xps M1710

    Windows Vista Ultimate
    Service Pack2
    Processor: Intel (R) Core (TM) 2 CPU T7600 @ 2.33 GHZ 2.33 GHZ

    Memory (RAM) 2 GB
System type 32 bit Operating System

    I'll appreciate any help.

    Thank you

    vv

There are 4 updates in Feb. 2014 affecting Vista. Two are critical and 2 are important.
    1. Critical 2909921 is for IE 7, 8 or 9

    2. Critical https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/bulletin/ms14-011
    depends on what is installed
    2909212 VBScript 5.7
    2909210 VBScript 5.8 (and IE 8)
    2909921 5.8 (and IE 9)

    3. Important https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/bulletin/ms14-009
has to do with .NET framework (look them over because there are too many iterations to list)

    4. Important 2916036

If you think it is an update causing the problem, work from item #4 up. Uninstall #4, reboot and see how the computer acts. If no different, install it again and then remove the items at #3.

Another plan: select a restore point before the updates were installed and see if the problem is fixed. If so, only do one update at a time until you've isolated which one is causing the problem.

    Hello plodr,

Sorry for the delay, but I was trying to do what you suggested.

I uninstall the first update and the computer started to crack so much that have to install it again.

I tied to restore it to a previous date before updating and never can be done. The computer reboots before it can be finish, so I decided not to insist.

So I managed to stop the automatic restart after the blue screen and got to see the error legend in the blue screen as following:

    KERNEL-DATA-INPAGE ERROR

    Technical Infomat:
    STOP: 0x0000007A (0xC0604000, 0XC000000E, 0x7EDD4880, 0xC0800000)

Hope that can give a clue of what's going on in the system.

    Thank you for your help,

If you can do this before the PC crashes on you try, as an INPAGE Error usually links to a malware, memory and HDD issue, could just be a corrupted sector to a loose cable or connection

From an elevated Command (CMD) prompt, to get elevated in the Start Search box type cmd and when it lists right click and Run as Administrator then at the prompt type chkdsk /f /r this will scan the drive for issues and repair them, its normal for the PC to reboot during to process to finalise the scan

How does your PC run if its in Safe Mode (F8 at boot and Safe Mode with Networking)?

    Hi DavidGP,

I didn't try in safe mode. I'll check that and let you know.
If the blue screen doesn't show in safe mode, do I need to run chkdsk?

    Thank you,

    vv

I would still run chkdsk, to see if you have errors that "may" cause the BSODs, just something to try and narrow the causes down as BSODs can be very vague problems and different cause per PC.

    Hello DavidGP,

Sorry for my delay, I wanted to check that the system was free of viruses so I was in malware section doing all the upload logs. All came back clean after the experts reviews.
The laptop was working actually very good beside the fact that reboot when idle, but suddenly today the screen freeze and since then I couldn't start the computer.

    Blue screen
STOP:C0000218{Registry File Failure}:The registry cannot load the hive(file)
    \SystemRoot\System32\Config\SECURITY
    or its log or alternate
It is corrupt, absent, or not writable.

Tried safe mode, from the last good configuration... and nothing

I ran chkdsk several times and fixed something on file9 (no idea what is that) and never complete the process as it reboot in the blue screen...

Unfortunately, this laptop had original windows xp and then updated to vista, I don't have the original vista cd to recover the start up.

any help I would really appreciate it!!!

    Thank you,

    Hi Adrynalyne,

I tried several times but when is starting step 3 (contracting stream... ?) seems like freezing and after a couple of minutes the blue screen...

I was looking for my Windows vista Recovery copy, but can't find it either. I'm stuck.

I will try again with chkdsk but do you have any other suggestion?

    Thank you,
