First off, I'd like to thank you folks for the wonderful work that you do !!
You gratefully help folks in need and do a wonderful job at it!

So, here's my story. I'm helping a friend out that clicked on a link in a "UPS email" - unfortunately it was not a tracking number but instead was the Windows Vista Restore virus/malware.

Before coming here, I ran Norton 360 from a boot disk It did find some things and "cleaned" them up. However the symptoms remain (Black desktop background, missing icons, etc.)

I came here and followed the READ & RUN ME FIRST procedures.
As part of the process I enabled viewing of hidden files, as directed.
I then noticed a shortcut on the desktop with a title of "Windows Vista Restore".

I right clicked it and selected "properties" to see what it would run. The Target is: C:\ProgramData\39313144.exe - If I go to that folder the 39313144 shows up but does not have the ".exe" extension displayed.

I thought that deleting this file might help but, in following directions, I have not done that yet. I have only run the requested software.
I downloaded everything on a different machine and ran the installs from a CD to the locations suggested in the directions.
I am attaching the resulting logs and would like to thank you in advance for helping me to get cleaned up.
I will also post a "Windows Vista Restore - logs2 with the additional log files.
    Thanks,
    max2002

I suggest you uninstall the Ask Toolbar.

Please download and save the below to your Desktop or anywhere else you can find it ( if the Desktop is not showing )

    http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/unhide.exe

Now run it. Now see if you can find your Programs and how are the icons on the Desktop looking?

Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    * Extract+ avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * -Do not change any check box options!!
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:

    * Now click the Execute button.
    * Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    * Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    * Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below log:

    • C:\MGlogs.zip
    • C:\Avenger.txt

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Thanks so much for your help and fast response.

I was able to find the uninstall file for ASK toolbar and removed it as suggested.

Programs seem to run ok now... Previously I tried running Picasa and all of the pictures were missing. They now show up fine. The desktop is still black and only has the new icons that I added when installing the removal tools. However, I can change the background and it seems to hold properly. I'm not sure if he head any files stored there or just shortcuts to applications. If it's the latter I can easily help him reset them.

The MRU wasn't showing any files from the start button, but I found the boxes had been unticked in the start menu properties privacy section. Re-ticking them got that working again.

Attached are the two logs that you asked for.

    Thanks Again,
    Max

Your logs are clean. You may need to reinstall any software that is missing or not working from the start menu.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.We recommend them for doing backup scans when you suspect a malware infection.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Malware removal from MajorGeeks = $0
