Got a toshiba laptop running windows vista that wont boot into vista or safe mode.
Trying to boot normally it gets to the first blue screen before you would select a user and hangs up on the please wait message.
If i try safe mode it loads a list of files and then hangs with the please wait message at the bottom.
I have a vista recovery disc i used on my hp laptop but when i run it on the toshiba it says its not compatable.
Any ideas on what to do.

Destructive Recovery. This means you will lose everything and the laptop will revert to the way it left the factory.
Another option is to buy a Vista disk if the same bit and version that is on the Toshiba and use that to repair Vista.

    just an example:

Managed to get a vista disc and have run the startup repair several times but as soon as i try to boot up it just hangs at the please wait message before entering user password.
I need to try and get into it to retrieve some work so a factory reset is a last resort.
I did manage to get into safe mode and try a restore point but no success, same problems on reboot.
Is there a way to just start windows with just the bare essentials other than safe mode?

The only options availabe when you press F8 during POST are:

    Safe Mode
    Safe Mode with Networking
    Safe Mode with Command Prompt

    Enable Boot Logging
    Enable Low Resolution Video (640 x 480)
Last Known Good Configuration (Advanced) — you could try this
    Directory Services Restore Mode
    Debugging Mode
Disable automatic restart on system failure
    Disable Driver Signature Enforcement

    Start Windows normally

If Last Known Good Configuration doesn't work for you, you may need to pull the drive and put it in an USB enclosure and get your files for work off of it that way by copying or moving them to the computer you're using to post here.
