Windows vista

I bought a computer with Vista home premium, I have a bunch of files on here and 2 partitions a c drive and a d drive. D drive is for data storage. I had a bunch of spyware on here and ran the read me run me and in the process of cleaning i lost a bunch of files to run the computer. My question is how do I reinstall vista a without a disk ( I was not given one) and is it possible to save the data on d drive by running a image restore if I can even do that. any help on this matter would be great as time is of the essence.

 

If you don't have a Vista disc, then the PC probably has a recovery partition. It's not the same as having a disc (and almost a worthless joke IMO) but if it's there, you should be able to reload the OS. When you first boot the PC you should see something like "press F10 for system recovery" or something similar. If not, contact your retailer/PC builder and find out how to initiate the system reload. If this option is not available, you should ask them why you have no way to re-install the operating system you paid for, and ask for/demand an installation or recovery disc.

 

thanks now my next question.. because i have 1 drive and 2 partitions if i ren the recovery will I lose the information on the data partition?

 

Generally yes you will loose all your data and the PC will become as it was when you just bought it. Your data/files gone and all the preloaded and trial software back. It may give you a Repair Option you can try but either way you should back up your data or save it else where before you attempt either.

I totally agree with dlb, I always recommend making sure recovery disks are part of a new PC package. I your hard drive your screwed.
