I woke up this morning to find that our family desktop simply will not startup. Both the computer and monitor turn on fine, but it gets to the Windows XP screen and says Please Wait... and never gets anywhere from there. I have no idea what could have happened, it was running fine last night and everyone else in the house swears they didn't touch it, that they woke up this morning to find the computer shutting itself down and now it won't start back up. What can I do, I can't even get to the screen to start in safe mode or anything like that.

If you have the installation disc, you can do a repair install ....boot with the cd in the drive ...hit enter when prompted to boot from cd ....let it load files ..first prompt to repair or install, choose install ....f8 to agreement ...then when it finds the previous install of xp, it will prompt for repair (R) or new install ...hit "R" ...and let it run ...it will save all files and programs, but lose any updates/service packs ...you'll have to install all the updates (sp2, etc.)

I don't think we got an installation disc with the computer, I've looked and can't find one. Windows XP was already pre-installed on the computer when we bought it. I'll keep looking for an installation disc, but I doubt we got one as all the discs that came with the computer are in one place and it's not there. Thanks for the suggestion though, and if I find the disc I'll definitely try that.

If you bought it at a retail store ...b*tch at them until they send you a disc ..other option is to contact the manufacturer and they often will send one for free or little cost.

Just to be clear, is it the windows boot screen (the low color one) that says "Please wait...", or the welcome screen?

First it's the black screen with the Windows logo and a green loading bar underneath, then it finishes loading, only to show the same screen again, but this one with "Please Wait..." instead of the loading bar. And that's as far as it gets, it stays on that screen...I can't get to the advances options screen to boot in safe mode, and neither going through startup again nor using system recovery solved the problem. And because I can't get to the advanced options screen, I can't try system restore.

Other option I can think of is to download a key finder (magic jelly bean, etc ...can't find the link but its on the site) to run from disc or cd....
then borrow someone else's xp disc and use the key you found to do the repair.

OK, I'll try that and see if I can get a friend's XP disc, thanks for the idea :)
