Windows won't "Automatic Update"

I am having problems getting my computer to Automatic Update. I go to windowsupdate.microsoft.com, and I choose "Express", then I wait, and wait, and wait. The progress bar moves, but nothing happens. Please help.

When did you last update and how long are we talking here that you are leaving it after clicking the "Express" option?

 

I'm not exactly sure how long it has been since I updated. I know it has been at least 2-3 months. The computer attempts to "automatically" update itself every so often, however, it always downloads the same three updates, and then fails to install them.

As far as wait time after clicking the "Express" option, I let it sit overnight once. So, I dunno, 8 hrs or so.

Also, I'm not sure if this is related, but there is a program called svchost.exe which seems to eat up a lot of the CPU usage (up to 99%) from time to time. Most of the time there is even multiple instances (5 or 6) of this program visible in the Task Manager. They slow down the computer so much that it becomes essentially unusable.
