Hi everyone, Im having a pretty big problem, and this site may be my last resort before formatting :(
I only have a laptop, with windows xp sp2 installed on it, in Czech version.
Thing is some for the last 3 days or so the computer wouldnt show the shut down options from windows when I did Start-Close, it would hang and I would shut it down manually.
Then yesterday I got this error at the boot " Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM "
So I checked the microsoft knowledge base the article 307545 .
Thing is I couldnt access the config folder to copy the files at the first place, and at the second place the copy c:\windows\repair\ doesnt exist (i guess because i didnt install the recovery console).
Also I copied the files from another OS and tried to copy them manually, but since I have only one CD/DVD drive and no floppy no nothing I couldnt access it, and when I tried via USB HD it wouldnt recognize it.
I got desperate and did FixMBR or Fixboot I dont remember.
Now the error is gone, BUT I get some screen with a lot of words in czech i dont quiet get, and the options to do boot in safe mode , last known good cfg and normal boot.
Well none of them work, when you press one it get the windows icon and all, but it just restarts and gets me back to the same screen. :cry
Im pretty desperate by now, and I dont want to lose my data, and because the OS came preinstalled and I dont have the original disk nor the code I dont want to reinstall cause Id loose the original lisence...
Please if someone knows anything I would very much appriciate it
    Thanks

Thanks for replying, but I dont want to do that because as I said I dont have an original OS disk, and I would lose the privleges. Is there any way to fix this problem without reinstalling?
    thnx again

You are going to need a disc....contact either the computer manufacturer or the store where you purchased it and tell them the situation...they should supply you with a disc.
