Windows Word Conversion

Well good morning all. I have a problem with .wps files on a machine. This unit is connected by LAN to share files on the Master. Nothing fancy just normal sharing basically. A new machine was installed and files shared to it from the master. All was working OK until the new machine copped a virus. Virus scan was done and removed using AVG. Since that point I am not able to open any of the .wps files. The file comes up in a gobbly gook format asking what converter to use. I have tried Downloading and install all the Microsoft converters for word etc. I have run a registry check and fixed errors in the registry, uninstalled Office 2003 and reinstalled, run an XP repair all to no avail. The .wps files still do the same they do not convert. The original files are in Microsoft Works 4.5. I installed 2003 office on the master but did not remove Works 4.5. This was just in case these files failed on that machine. Any ideas on what may be causing this? Thanks Frozen_1
