Windows XP 64 or Windows 7

    Hi! I'm updating my hardware with ASROCK K10N78 mobo, Athlon 64 5000 dual core, PC2-6400 memory, and other hardware. Undecided on OS. What are advantages/disadvantages of Microsoft 32bit, 64bit, or Windows 7? Only using desktop for some games, surfing web and other minor tasks.

    We could use one more bit of system information from you: You say you have PC2-6400 memory, but how much of this do you have?

    As well as the info asked for above, I would also run the Upgrade Advisor tool for Windows 7 to see if any of your hardware or software may create issues, should also tell you if you can run 64bit ok, Download HERE

    I'll assume you wanted a comparison between XP bit flavours to W7. I'd go for 32-bit W7 just because it's newer and 64-bit would be fine too, there's not that much difference yet between the two. Home premium should fit the bill nicely for what you want to do. As for your memory, if you have 2GB then you're fine. Anyways, run the analyzer as mentioned above and your PC should pass with flying colours. If they're old games like from Win98 or earlier, you may have a problem.

    I have 2 gigs of memory right know but will add 2 more. Based on your input and a write-up I read on the web I have decided to go with Windows 7. Thanks guys.::wave

    Glad we could help.

    Personally I would recommend either adding 1GB more RAM and going with win7 x32, or adding 3 more GB and going with win7 x64.
