Windows XP Activation locks up

I have a old computer that is still used by the family often for internet browsing and light gaming by the kids (4year old). TLDR at bottom

Well, the computer started crashing on me randomly, so I bought a new motherboard, computer worked again for another year, then it stopped booting. I took a closer look at both motherboards (one an Asus, one an Intel), both had blown caps at different places. well, I replaced the caps today (computer hasn't been used since January) and first I was getting "system started improperly, discard saved settings or attempt repair" or something like that. I discarded and attempted to boot 'normally', it lagged bad and got through the WindowsXP splash screen and then the activation thing came up but the keyboard and mouse were frozen.

I inserted my WindowsXP SP2 disc and attempted to boot from that, but as soon as it gets to "Setup is configuring your hardware" it goes to a blank black screen, tapping the power button shuts the computer back off (not holding it). I also tried booting with UBCD4Win and it does the same thing "Setup is configuring hardware" black screen.

I threw my Ubuntu CD in and reloaded Grub so now I'm in my Ubuntu partition but need WinXP for printing something.

computer is a Compaq Presario 5310US, the motherboard is the original currently, harddrive is upgraded but ghosted from the old one (it worked fine prior to blown caps).

TLDR; computer locks up at Windows Activation and blank screen on WinXP disc after "setup is configuring your hardware"

said screw it, used NTFS for DOS to pull anything (hardly anything), put it all on ubuntu partition, used ubuntu partition editor to delete XP partition, XPSP2 cd booted just fine after that, sure I had to reinstall all my drivers but it was a small price to pay to have computer back and to be able to print (whole reason I needed that computer back).
