After installing the newest version of Avast on my Accer XP windows I ended up with a blue screen. I went into safe mode and uninstalled it which from what I am reading is a bad thing to do being that Avast has its own uninstalled tool. I can get into safe mode but do not have no internet functions (tells me server cannot be found). When I go into normal mode the screen comes up with the icons but none of he programs will open. All restore points are gone. I go into control panel, network connections and the folder is empty. Is there a emergency repair disk/software that would work on this to repair the registry or operating system without doing a full reload. I have the original recovery disks that came with the computer but I am afraid to use them as I do not want to lose everything. It is either repair it or buy a new computer seeing the xp is no longer supported and I am short on funds.

You have the OS installation disc. From the desktop, can you go to Start -> Run? If you can, in the Run box type in "sfc /scannow" without the quotes qnd include the space between the c and forward slash. This will run System File Checker. Insert the OS installation CD when it asks for it. This will attempt to repair/replace any corrupted or missing Windows files without affecting any of your data.

XP isn't dead yet. Microsoft isn't supplying security updates for it but definition updates for MSE will continue until April of next year and there's a slew of third party companies like Avast, AVG, Comodo, etc. that are continuing support for XP for at least two more years. I, myself am running XP with Comodo Internet Security, MalwareBytes Antimalware, MalwareBytes Antiexploit, SuperAntiSpyware, WinPatrol Plus and Spyware Blaster. None of them are conflicting with each other and so far, haven't found anything.

Personally, I don't think the hackers are going after individuals but, rather, corporations and government agencies where they would do the most damage.

I tried doing what you said. It flashes on the screen and then disappears. When I type in dcomcnfg and I go into services I would say 98 percent of them are disabled. If I hit F12 and boot from the cd will that just wipe out the drive and reinstall xp?

If you tried to run sfc /scannow from Safe Mode, it doesn't work in Safe Mode. You need to run it from normal boot and you would use Disk 1-System CD. When you run in Safe Mode, most of the services WILL be disabled.

I tried the running what you said (sfc /scannow) and put in the system cd and I got the message I needed a windows xp disk. I had to restart the computer just to get out of that. So now what?

That System CD should have been the XP installation CD. Unfortunately,I don't know how Acer set up the Cds you have so, I'm at a loss. Hopefully, someone can jump in and assist you further. Sorry. :-o
