Windows xp boot problems

Hi i am bawbag1golf a new member,in need of some help.when switching on computor i get start windows normally,but it wont let me ,i have tried rebooting from windows xp disk but no joy i have tried all the on screen instructions and its a no go-er ,would appreciate any ideas ,i a bit of a novice at this older guy catching up with technolgy ,bekind cheers

What happens when you switch the computer on. What messages (if any) appear on the screen ?

 

well the password screen comes up, I put in the password and then it says logging off and goes back to the password screen.

UPDATE
DH replaced a few files from the repair directory but he was unable edit the registry from across the network

 

the message on the screen goes to a menu choice including start on safe mode ,last good configuration,and appears to be stuck on start windows normally but when selected nothing happens .it goes onto a reboot cycle ,over and over again,cheers frank

 

Try starting it up in safe mode it may look a bit funny, then run a virus and malware check

 

I have run a deep scan with MS malicious software removal kit an Vipre. The computer is now logging in but seems a bit whacked.
