Yesterday I came home from work and my laptop was off. So I turned it back on and I didn't pay any attention to it and then it was off again.. So I turned it back on and watched it, it starts as it would normally and then before the splash screen ( windows XP loading screen ) comes up it says boot failure ( i think it said that ) and a problem in the \windows\system32\config\system , and it said something about inserting the xp disk and hitting R to repair. So I did that and then I seen it was something that I didn't know what it was, so i exited that and turned it off. and then I was going to try to replace the XP operating system and just reload it all. So when I tried to turn on the pc, it loads up the windows xP loader( that blue screen ) and then it just dies repeatedly. I'm not sure why, after that blue screen loads, the Pc turns off.

I have some files on the harddrive that I would like to keep,. but I guess were over that and it cannot be saved?

    Thanks guys!

I posted this twice because this could be a hardware or a software problem. I'm not sure.

    Hi

With the Blue Screen, does it give you a error message is so what is it in full?

Can you hit F8 at boot and go into safe mode ok?

As for data recovery, its possible and reciently I did manage to recover data from a PC that wouldnt boot at all, likely hard drive, hard fault. So used Acronis True Image 2009 15 day demo, installed on a different PC and created the Acronis Bootable rescue CD, then using this CD I changed the boot order in the BIOS of the faulty PC to boot to CDROM, then using the Acronis CD, I managed to locate the folders that needed to be backed up and created an Image file of them onto a portable Hard Drive, but USB pen large enough would handle some folders. Once the image file was created on a working PC, you can double click the Image file and view its contents, just highlight and right click copy to a new folder.

now this is exactly what I needed to do...

Problem is that I cannot even get to the repair console.. Once it loads the xp disk and the blue screen is ready, PC shuts off.

Halo thanks for that info. I'll be needing that shortly.

As far as the laptop is concerned, I put in the XP cd and boot from CDRom. It boots and loads the XP disk and right before it shows me the 3 options, the pc turns off.

    yeah after that....

I did the whole new partition etc and didnt work. SO I'm going to have to figure something out..

As you can see if my first post, I said that the windows XP disk wouldnt even load past the blue screen, and then I tired it not too long ago and it work ( obviously ) but now its shutting off again by itself.

    brb... gotta figure this out.

Ive been browsing articles alll day. do you have the link to the ones that says about those warnings? ( or am I just missing it )

I had success with part B. I believe the Pc was getting hot since it was on my lap, so i plugged it in and put the laptop on a desk and it hasn't shut off yet.

Thanks for your posts. I had never heard of the System Restore through Recovery Console until about a week ago. Then I see that several people here are aware of it. I'm glad to see someone actually complete the procedure with success.

My only reservation about your situation is the blue screens. I hope it is a temperature thing but you might want to do a RAM test and/or a HD test to make sure both are ok.

    Do you have links bud?

Also, I'm getting a plethora of pop up errors in windows. ( the ones that say send report or dont send )

How do I reload windows? Just put that same disk in and choose the reload windows option ( is there such an option? )

    Thanks!

Try Belarc Advisor to check the S.M.A.R.T. status of your HD. If the SMART status is bad get the HD manufacturer name from BA and download their diagnostic tools. If Seagate/Maxtor or WesternDigital run the Long test and see if it can repair errors.

To check the RAM probably the fastest way would be to see if your laptop has more than one RAM stick. If it does remove one and restart to see if problem persists. Then try starting with just the other one.

EDIT: Thanks MarkTrent for the more detailed post above.

    oohhhh...

    new info...

I just finished backing up my things and I got another error that popped up.. somethying about NT secuirty or the like ended my windows session automatically in 30 seconds.
    The error is c:\windows\system32\lsass.exe
    Terminated because of code 1073741819

This is all new to me... So the PC restarted and a black screen appeared and says " Windows could not start because of an error in the software. Please report problem as: Load needed DLLs for kernel. Please contact your support person to report this problem."

    Any idea?

A reformat is probably a good idea since you have backed up your data. I would take five minutes to see what Belarc Advisor says about your SMART status beforehand just to see if the HD is possibly a problem.

Remember, you had problems with the XP setup earlier so it couldn't hurt to eliminate or confirm HD problems before reformatting.

I gave a link to Belarc above. It just installs and displays the info in your web browser. You are looking for S.M.A.R.T. status. It will be either good or Bad.

Problem... after that last error I posted (post#19 ) I cannot access nothing anymore. I got an all black screen... and this "Windows could not start because of an error in the software. Please report problem as: Load needed DLLs for kernel. Please contact your support person to report this problem."

    Any idea?

Do I just put that windows XP disk in and let it do its thing?

Whats the difference between the different types of Windows? I have Home here on a CD, and on the PC I have Media.

    Thanks!

Last update fellas. All is well. I installed a new version of windows, ( but realized that it wont work for my laptop, no wireless drivers etc... ) then I remembered that I had the OLDDD backup disks I made when I bought the laptop and I loaded them up and were back to stage one. Thanks!
