    Hi.
From the results of the last post I had on this site, it was found that some files in my Operating System were corrupt and I needed to do a clean install of the OS.
I have now aquired the CD for the full version of XP Home and now I hope that someone can guide me through that procedure, as I don't know very much about computers.
    Many thanks.

    hi acejones.
thanks, i took a look at the link that you provided but it may as well been in martian, didn't understand it at all.
when i spoke to "the new tech guy" with my problem before, he said that i would have to backup all the stuff on my computer or i would loose it. this guide says to just put the disc in the cd drive and start up the computer, nothing about backing up anything.
which brings me to my original problem, my computer won't do any of these things now, ie... defrag, backup, restore, etc. i was told that i could get around those problems when the time came.
so i got the full operating system disc, ( i only had an upgrade version before)
and what i need is an idiots step by step guide on how to do this clean install and still keep all the stuff that i have on my computer.

My Sympathy - it aint easy and sadly if your whole system is messed up you either have to do the hard yards as was suggested earlier or you could try this.
If Explorer works copy all your personal files onto removable media CD or jumpstick or suchlike.
Then try the following click on "Run" and type this into the menu that opens
    sfc /scannow
note the space between sfc and the slash.
If you had a legit upgrade to XP have that available because the system will need that to restore any system files that have been stuffed up.
Hope this helps and solves the problem - otherwise you have to do a complete reformat and start from scratch - on this occasion using the new version of XP you have bought which presumably will be XP2

OK, just tried that, but still nothing works. Yes, the disc i have is xp Home and it says that is can be used on computers with no operating system or to upgrade.

a clean install is not keeping things on the computer. thats why when you said a clean install, i gave you a link to a guide for a clean install. you are wanting to reinstall xp. read this guide to do a repair install for xp. http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

not sure who that comment is to, but if you notice, he's looking to do a reinstall, not a format/install.
