If anyone could help me it would be much appreciated. A couple weeks ago, during the night while I was sleeping, the power quickly went out and came back on. My desktop computer was off at the time, plugged into a surge protector....however the surge protector was not plugged into a grounded outlet. In the morning, when I turned on my computer, something wasn't right. For some reason, the internet would not work. If I tried opening up "network connections" the computer would freeze. If I tried pressing control-alt-delete and ending task, everything on the desktop would disappear including the taskbar, and I would have to hit the power button. The computer also would not shut down on its own.

I found that once in awhile, if I waited long enough, the internet would kick in...but not usually. I was advised to put in my Windows XP Pro CD and do a repair install. As soon as I did that, everything worked great right away. However, this only lasted 2 days, and now I'm back to the same problems. Any suggestions??? PLEASE HELP!! I'm hoping I don't have to replace hardware, but if I do, what needs to be replaced? Thanks!

I do indeed have a proper power supply. In fact, ever since the power surge, I actually switched outlets to make sure my computer is grounded from now on. Once I get the computer started and everything running, it works fine. However, it's hard to get it started...windows will open when I log on, but not everything loads (such as the internet connection). Then, it will not shut down. I have to hold down the power button to get it to turn off.

still sounds like the power supply, try a different power supply and check.or try a different power surge.

Thanks for the quick responses. This is really stressing me out. hmmm...I'm not sure what else to do. I tried another outlet, still no luck. I already checked the voltage coming out of the outlet, and everything looks fine.

hmm...I can try getting a hold of one. I don't have a spare hard drive laying around though. I'm not sure how willing somebody will be for me to take the hard drive out of their computer to try it in mine. I am writing to you from my laptop...I don't think laptops have compatible hard drives with desktops, and I'm kind of hesitant to take apart my one working computer. Is there any other way? I'll work on finding a hard drive to use.
