I read the other threads and they're different than the trouble I have.

It's a compaq presario with Windows XP serv pack 1. It was plagued with virus but was supposedly cleaned up by Staples. My nephew uses it for playing Runescape, youtube and myspace. that's it.

Anyhow, I had it running just fine the other day and then poof - he started it and has green screen. Now, I've made sure everything is tight inside the tower. It will not start in safe mode. system recovery acts like it's doing its thing but then it says windows is missing a file and refuses to do anything else.

There are somehow 2 copies of XP on here - idk how as this was my husband's old pc and I nvr dual booted. rolleyes The first copy says incomplete system files, and the second one is green screen.

I've been advised to use kill disk and install Linux which is fine - but how in the world do I get to a screen to make the disk run?

when I put in the disk w/the grn screen - I get an arrow and a cd curser then nothing happens. It's a bootable cd btw.

Any other information I can give let me know. I'm just not sure how to go about doing what I need to do. lol - nvr had one crash this hard. Ty!

Oh and no - the restoration CD's are long lost. I have one - but not the other. *Shrugs*

That is an idea. The only pcs in the house are Dell, and Dell and Acer. Those XP disks won't be compatible will they? We don't have just one XP CD and no one else I know has one either. I'd be fine with putting XP back on it - if I could get that to happen.

Ok I can try that. Now my question is - when I stick it in will it just run? (I'm not near the thing atm and my daughter is home sick so I can't go play with it right now. )

I assumed the Killdisk would auto run and do it's thing - but it's just not. Well perhaps with another xp that will do something that the kill disk can't.

I should perhaps get it to a DOS screen but I'm not sure how to. I mean, it's giving me the F8 options of last good config, safe mode and so on - but none of those will give me a windows screen to access the drive.

The op system screen like I said, has two copies one is dysfunctional and the other - green screen. *sigh* stupid computers. lol

Yeah Idc if it's windows or linux as long as I can fix it.
