windows xp home edition not shutting down

I have a compaq windows xp home edition sp2
gets stuck at shut down gets to the screen that says windows is shutting down but doesnt.

i started pc in safe mode and then it will shut down but not in normal mode.
i disabled the video card but did not help. i ran msconfig and disabled everything that was running in startup but didnt help.
the machine had a lot of spyware and adware used counter spy to remove but machine will not shut down.

I had the same problem with my HP.
Did you go to Administrative Tools > Event Viewer > Applications and see if there are any error messages coinciding with the times you tried to shutdown?
If no errors there, click on System, then in the right hand panel left click on "Source", scroll down and find any "srservice" errors. If there is an error coinciding to the attempted shutdown time, double click on the error and see what the info. on the error is.
If no errors there go to http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...6D-8912-4E18-B570-42470E2F3582&displaylang=en download and install UphClean (User profile hive cleanup service). This forces user profiles to give up their "claim" on the registry, so to speak.
I found in my case, if at any time I put my PC in standby mode, it would not shutdown properly. I've read that Windows Power Management has a few bugs. I had to go into power option properties and place
Turn off monitor - Never
Turn off hard disks - Never
System Standby - Never

Hopefully what I've described here will help with the problem. At least it's a start to eliminate items not causing the problem as you stated in your post you have already begun to do.
