I just got my computer rid of some spyware/malware, and, now, I'm trying to install the service packs, and I can't because I need IE 5+. No problem, right? Wrong! I get this error after I run the installer:

"The procedure entry point SHRegGetValueW could not be located in the dynamic link library SHLWAPI.dll"

    any help?

It's possible that you still having malware or virus in your computer, you have to be sure there's no infections or is posible that you can't install some software or updates.

I suggest to you read the Basic Guide to remove malware and Virus from Major geeks:

    *****************************************************************************************************************
RECOMMENDED====>READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide <==== RECOMMENDED
    ******************************************************************************************************************
If you are lazy or don't want to do that recommended step, you could do the next steps:

    1. Start > run > MRT (Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool, only if you constantly update windows)

Get the last version of this tool here:

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyId=AD724AE0-E72D-4F54-9AB3-75B8EB148356&displaylang=en

    2. Use Malwarebytes, Superantispyware or some malware removal tool:

    http://majorgeeks.com/SUPERAntiSpyware_d5116.html
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=5756

3.Use CCleaner to delete some temp files or registry problems:

Attempt to install service pack again.

    Hope it helps.:zzz

I just did the first step. That was what cleaned my PC. Now, it turns out that the problem he resurfaced! I can't download malwarebytes, or connect to Mircosoft.com!

Did you use SuperAntiSpyware? If so, there are some tools built-in that might help you reset certain parts of Windows.

Yes. Can you tell me which tools? Also, if this is of any help, here's the thread where someone walked me through it, with logs included. http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?p=1538870&posted=1#post1538870

also: scanning with SuperAntiSpyware as we speak

Before we go much further with this, can you attach the setuperr.log from the Windows folder please, it'll tell us if there were any errors during the original install. The easiest fix for this may be a repair install, from the i386 folder if you can copy it from the CD to the hard drive.

EDIT: MGs hosts the setup for IE6 SP1, can you try to install it please?

There is no such file in the windows folder. The folder is C:\windows, correct?

that means you can connect f,e google.com and not microsoft.com?

That sounds like a Malware running there pal, i saw that kind of problems before, it blocks you to get Microsoft, antivirus websites, antimalware websites... but you can navigate other websites, isn't?

Btw, look that you're typing correctly Microsoft.com and not as you posted Mircosoft.com!

Ah, it may be different in earlier SP's or between Pro and Home, try in C: you may need to unhide hidden files and folders but I don't think so.

Did you see the earlier edit?

I tried the Download, but the installer needs to download from microsoft.com.

Missed the file first time around, BTW i'll attach it.

also, I have tried links for Microsoft, but, yes, you are correct about the 'ware

Ok, the log shows an error I've never seen before. No point in trying to fix something that may not exist because of an install glitch.

I'd copy over the i386 files from the Windows CD and make a new install - not a repair - by running winnt32.exe to launch Windows setup. If the files don't copy over cleanly, it may explain why your install didn't go well = bad CD.

Grab the installer for a good firewall before you do this, run Setup whilst disconnected physically from the 'net and install the firewall before reconnecting.

Heh heh... funny story about that restore...

my comp didn't use a disk in the first place. Is this a problem?

It's certainly a problem if Windows doesn't install correctly.

Back to the Malware forum, you may have an MBR virus or rootkit that's shafting you before you start installing.

Well, since it's supposedly the same malware as in the link before, should I just post there?

I see no indication of that but using the same thread seems like a good idea.

So tell us, how did you do the reinstall without a CD?

I didn't re-install, i just did a destructive system recovery. I believe that that was stated in either this thread or the one i linked to. Also, I apologize if i have not.

I saw the mention of the destructive system recovery in the other thread.

So, how do you intend to make a new install when your current data is suspect?

I didn't. Really, it sounds like a terrible idea. Especially since my friends like to borrow my software when they're at my house... Would teach them a lesson though... lol.
