Hi, and thanks in advance for any advice.

I am trying to work on a computer for a friend, and am getting multiple errors.

1.) My Computer is completely missing. There is no way to get into admin that I can find.

2.) When I try to select Safe mode, the screen flashes, and the computer appears to quickly reboot, and says that there was a power outage and it started over again

3.) I can add and remove icons and jpgs and even paste Avast on from a CDrom, but if I try to open any programs or get into anything on the control panel, I get this message: windows cannot access the specified device path or file you may not have appopriate permission to access the item

4.)She let her granddaughter use it, and it is riddled with icons and .exe's for Torrent, Limewire, and MTV. We think this is the source of the problem

5.) There is no ...what's the word?....original Windows boot disks because those were lost in a housefire. All she managed to save was her purse and her laptop, which were by the door when she ran out.

6.) She has numerous antivirus programs on the machine, and it appears most of them are rogue. I see RegCure, AntiMalware Suite, Spyware Remover 2009, AntivirusPro_2010, Avast, and I saw a Norton icon, although it doesn't show on the menu. The AntivirusPro_2010 was created on 10-8-9.

I can't find if there's a restore point because I can't log on as admin. The only log in that's showing is the grandmother's name, and it doesn't appear to be admin.

Any suggestions MUCH appreciated, and please keep it simple. I'm a decently hobby user, but not an expert.

    Thanks!!!!!!!!

    g'day Springlering

it would appear you have a infection antivirus pro 2010 is a malware program and as you say her granddaughter had access to the unit she more than likely came across a site that prompted her to download and install this program.it is easy to be scared into this as the program makes it appear that your pc is infested with volumes of viruses and worms.
once this program is onboard it plays havoc with the pc,if you are able to get to the desk top and run the malware programs and follow the guide found here " http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407 ".try and follow as much of this guide as you can and post the suggested logs in the malware forum and be patient the malware experts will get to you as soon as possible.
once your pc is clean post here again for any other assistance you may need to help secure and optimize the pc.good luck and i hope this helps you.

Her laptop will have a sticker on the bottom showing if XP Home or Pro was installed along with the serial number.
Get the same flavor of XP and do a clean install using the serial number on the bottom. I ordinarily do not recommend a clean install but with so many infections and other problems on the laptop, I think you'd be wasting a lot of time trying to clean it up, particularly if you can not use an administrator account.

The other option is to contact the manufacturer and see if restore disks are sold. Some manufacturers do sell them once you provide the numbers on the computer. (Not the windows serial number but the other numbers).
