    * Click on the volume (speaker) icon in the taskbar (next to the date/time) and be sure the sound isn't set to "mute".

    * Go to START>CONTROL PANEL>SYSTEM and choose DEVICE MANAGER (it may be called Hardware Manager in XP; I can't remember). Look for and click on the SOUND listing to expand it. If you see a red x or yellow ? by one of the drivers it means it's missing or corrupted.

    * Even if a "x" or "?" doesn't appear, I would still go to the PC mfr's website and download/install the latest audio drivers for your specific model. Occasionally a Windows Update will cause issues with non-current drivers.

If these (or other) posts don't solve the problem and/or the internal sound card is bad, you can add a USB sound card. A card like this won't always enable the internal speakers; however it will provide sound via headphones or external speakers.

    Hope this helps :)
