Alright i went to a vice city website that helps with the game, the whole computer freezes so i press the restart button on the computer. I always had to click my account on the Windows XP page before being able to do anything, but this time they asked for a password. I never had a password.

So I call my friend and he asks his friend what the problem might be, i tried to go onto safe mode they ask for password. his friend said that a windows file was probably being changed and it froze during that time, so that is why this is happening. I tried not putting a password and admin, neither works. I do not know how to get around the password and there is no Guest log in.

When i click ok for the password i get this

"The system cannot log you on due to the following error:

The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted.

Please try again or consult your system administration."

This comes up to anytime i click the ok for the password. In Safe mode there is my user name and "administration" both ask for password and i get the same result for both.
If anyone knows how to fix this please help.

    Thank you.

Is this xp home or pro.

In my mind, this has to be pro.

If pro, there should be an option to see more details. See if you can log on locally, by changing the domain to local.

Its been awhile, but, i can get it started for you. you need your XP disk, then you choose repair, then after that you get some options.
Like I said it has been awhile, so hopefully some one can get you from here.
it is possible, I will look into it now, if someone cant help you quicker....
You do need your XP disk and serial

You can easily change or wipe out your Administrator password for free during a Windows XP Repair. Here’s how with a step-by-step description of the initial Repair process included for newbie’s.
    1. Place your Windows XP CD in your cd-rom and start your computer (it’s assumed here that your XP CD is bootable – as it should be - and that you have your bios set to boot from CD)
    2. Keep your eye on the screen messages for booting to your cd Typically, it will be “Press any key to boot from cd”
    3. Once you get in, the first screen will indicate that Setup is inspecting your system and loading files.

    4. When you get to the Welcome to Setup screen, press ENTER to Setup Windows now
    5. The Licensing Agreement comes next - Press F8 to accept it.
    6. The next screen is the Setup screen which gives you the option to do a Repair.

It should read something like “If one of the following Windows XP installations is damaged, Setup can try to repair it”
Use the up and down arrow keys to select your XP installation (if you only have one, it should already be selected) and press R to begin the Repair process.
    7. Let the Repair run. Setup will now check your disks and then start copying files which can take several minutes.
    8. Shortly after the Copying Files stage, you will be required to reboot. (this will happen automatically – you will see a progress bar stating “Your computer will reboot in 15 seconds”
    9. During the reboot, do not make the mistake of “pressing any key” to boot from the CD again! Setup will resume automatically with the standard billboard screens and you will notice Installing Windows is highlighted.
    10. Keep your eye on the lower left hand side of the screen and when you see the Installing Devices progress bar, press SHIFT + F10. This is the security hole! A command console will now open up giving you the potential for wide access to your system.
    11. At the prompt, type NUSRMGR.CPL and press Enter. Voila! You have just gained graphical access to your User Accounts in the Control Panel.
    12. Now simply pick the account you need to change and remove or change your password as you prefer. If you want to log on without having to enter your new password, you can type control userpasswords2 at the prompt and choose to log on without being asked for password. After you’ve made your changes close the windows, exit the command box and continue on with the Repair (have your Product key handy).
    13. Once the Repair is done, you will be able to log on with your new password (or without a password if you chose not to use one or if you chose not to be asked for a password). Your programs and personalized settings should remain intact.

Excellent idea. I knew about the Shift + F10 part. Never though about the nusrmgr.cpl part.

Question ...on your login screen, do you show an option for a domain and a local machine? Under options does it open the screen for you to log on to : choices?

On the login screen i only can do the turn off (restart, standby, and shutdown) and my account (Pav).

In the safe mode there is my account and Administration. There are no other choices.

And you can't log into your account in safe mode?

    Another thing to try.

When you are at the logon screen, hit CTRL + ALT + DEL two times in a row. This will bring up the "old" Logon prompt. It will ask for your logon (login) name and password

yes and my own logon also.

well i have norton ghost 9. I have it on a cd and all i need to do is get it to boot up. But for some reason it does not let me boot it up at the start like the windows xp cd does. There is no "press they any key" time. how can i fix this?

BTW i also got a error ONCE. it said the following:

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
    <windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
Please re-install a copy of the above file."

Yet afterwards i was still able to reach the login screen.

Do what was given on the first page. With the Windows XP CD. If not ask the person you bought the computer from what his password is.
