Windows Xp Pro Help!?

I just got a dell, and when i hold down CTRL to select more then one icon.... my mouse freaks out and goz to the bottom of the screen, and i can't multi select..... what should i do???has anyone heard of this problem before?

No, I've never seen that before.

Have you tried it from Safe Mode?

 

hmmm no you mean try doin it in safe mode? that is a good idea i am gonna try that right now.... if it dzn't happen their what does that mean?

 

If it doesn't happen there, its usually third party software doing it.

I suspect your mouse software, right off the bat, but there are more logical, linear ways to narrow it down.

 

ya it still happens in safe mode... i have a new optic mouse.... i didn't install the software for it... but it works fine.... could that really be it? the mouse software messing up the multi select when holding down CTRL ?

 

Not if you didn't install software....

What kind of surface do you have it on?

Try puting a blank, white sheet of paper under it.

Have you scanned for viruses?

I reccomend an online scanner.

hmmm i will try that but even if i turn the mouse over and it isn't touchin the comp bogs down and messes sh*t up!? its so weird! i will run that scan tho now but i dunno what is goin on....its just u hold down ctrl and then click around and it messed up and the mouse moves on its own =)(~

 

Also, make sure Smart Move is not enabled.

Go to Control Panel >Mouse.

What kind of keyboard do you have? I know some have built in touchpads and stuff.

nah just the reg. dell one... i tried switchin the keyboards still dz it....

 

What version is mouclass.sys?

Its located in C:\windows\system32\drivers.

Right click, choose properties.

Click on the version tab.

Install Sp1.

That will update it. See if that helps.

After that virus scan, of course.

Just some questions:

Besides being optical, is the mouse also wireless ? (If so have you tried to change the frequency?)

I guess the mouse is plugged into an USB port right ? (If so have you tried to use a different USB port ? did you get a USB->PS/2 converter ? if so have you tried using that instead ?)

 

nah the mouse is pluged right into the mouse port... do you guys def think this is a mouse problem? or a software problem? bc i can hunt down another mouse and switch them and mess with it that way.... what do you guys think bc if u hold down ctrl it messes up programs too so
