If the CD is a retail disc, or an OEM builder's disc (which is different from an OEM manufacturer's disc), and it's the same version as the key sticker on the PC, then you should not have any problems. If the disc is an upgrade of XP Pro, it will not take the key from the sticker. If the disc is a volume license or corporate disc, it will not take the key from the sticker. It could also be that you're entering the key wrong (the letter B sometimes looks like the number 8; the letter D can look like the number zero). Just remember that Windows keys do not have any vowels, no S, no Z, no 2, no 5, no 1, and no zero. If all else fails, maybe your keyboard is bad, or if numlock is stuck on, some letters will come up as numbers... try a USB or PS2 'external' keyboard.

On my current PC i have a Windows XP professional Key on a sticker on the side, but i decided to put WinXP Home ed on it because i didnt not own a Professional Disc. But when i got my laptop, it had Pro on it already, but it had all kinds of stuff preloaded on it, and i wanted to start out fresh. So i dumped it, then tried to reinstall WinXP Pro. I have tried the Key on the sticker on my Desktop computer, and the one on my laptop, and even the one thats On the disc itself. And no matter what i do, it always tells me that the Product key is invalid. ( Btw the computer came with the Pro disc, but did not come with a Windows booklet, or..manual or anything. just the disc and that key on the underside )

I'll just do what i have done with my other computers. Ill use the Home ed key i have from my other dell. and install Home edition on my laptop. That has worked on like 3 computers.

btw the computer is an Acer Aspire 3000 laptop.
